Managers and Administrators, I need your help. What follows is part of a USENET newsgroup posting I sent out last Saturday. I have gotten responses from a number of researchers, and these have been quite helpful. But no responses from Administrators or Managers. I refuse to believe that you are not using the Internet in creative and productive ways. Can you help? Please spend a few minutes describing how access to a high speed network has transformed your work. Note that I do not distinguished between the use of Ethernet or the use of the Internet. I do believe that one can gain benefits from either Ethernet (local exchange of information) or from the Internet (global exchange of information). Your experiences would be appreciated. Please include a contact name and your University/College or business affiliation. Of course I will post a summary of responses. Bob Reinking ============================================================ The University of Arizona, College of Medicine Administration has asked me to provide some documentation on the usefulness of implementing Ethernet connectivity. I believe that our College of Medicine could benefit from client server applications, new teaching methods that use Ethernet, from interchanges with colleagues and from access to information from around the world. What I need is to document your experiences. I want the administration to be able to read about your successes. Please tell us, in a one-page document, why we need it. What are the advantages. Does it save time. Does it save money? What I would like to produce is a collection of one-page success stories, or case reports. I would be very happy to receive information on more than one topic. The idea is to provide something that can read and immediately grasp by non-technical people. Ideally, each case study would include an estimate of the dollars/year saved. One approach would be to select a topic from the list, tell how was the problem was solved before networking was used, how it is solved using Ethernet/Internet, and, how much money was saved. Here are some starting points- Calendar/Scheduling applications- Specifically, tools that work across the Internet. Can someone provide documentation about how much time and money was saved comparing the telephone method (for example) with an Ethernet solution? Information gathering tools (databases, client/server stuff, etc.)- I don't really care what tool (I don't even need the name) is used, but I am interested to know how it saved money. Business managers want to have good, solid data to make decisions. Can you provide an example of a situation that resulted in a good decision being made, using Ethernet, that could not have otherwise been made? Or made rapidly enough to have had an impact. How much money did it save? Library access- Does this save money? Can you document that fact? Computer hardware/software purchase decisions- Can anyone document a real savings in purchase cost that resulted directly from Internet access? Other- Can anyone think of other issues where a cost or time savings have been demonstrated because of Ethernet/Internet?
