Robert Redford Urges 18-29 Year Olds to be "Swing Vote" To: National Desk, Environment Writer Contact: Brian Trelstad of Campus Green Vote, 202-667-3117 WASHINGTON, Oct. 29 -- With the latest CNN/USA Today tracking poll of likely voters showing a 2-point difference between Bush and Clinton, the preferences of younger voters, who are not considered "likely" voters by polling firms, takes on enormous importance. Robert Redford and the popular band Blues Traveller are urging 18-29 year-olds to get out the vote this week as part of Campus Green Vote's national campaign to turn out more than 100,000 young voters on election day. "You've organized and registered your peers in record numbers," Redford said in a public service announcement (PSA) playing this week over 700 college radio stations. "The candidates are listening to you, they're paying attention. Let your voice continue to build in your quest to protect your future. Bring it full circle and send a deafening roar on election day." To ensure high eco-voter turnout this election year Campus Green Vote has just launched its "Get Out the Green Vote" drive on campuses and in communities across the nation. Campus Green Vote is organizing phonebanking and canvassing efforts and is going door-to-door to urge eco-voters to pledge their intent to make it to the polls on Nov. 3. "If you're like most young people today you're deeply concerned about protecting the environment...voting is the most effective way we have of effecting real change," said Mr. Popper of Blues Traveller. "This year there's one simple thing people can do to save the earth: vote!" said Brian Trelstad, director of Campus Green Vote, a national organization dedicated to reversing the historically low voter turnout among 18-30 year olds. With the final registration totals just in, Campus Green Vote announced today that its voter drive has registered 107,704 eco-voters at 180 schools in 27 states as part of its national effort to involve young environmentalists in the 1992 elections. To boost turnout nationwide, Campus Green Vote is working in coalition with Rock the Vote, the United States Student Association, NARAL Campus Organizing Project, the Center for Policy Alternatives and the ADA Education Fund. -30-
