Assistant Professor
Educational Linguistics

The Graduate School of Education, University of California,
Berkeley, seeks a scholar in Educational Linguistics with
specialized knowledge in the education of language minority
students for a tenure track assistant professor position, to
begin in July 1999. The individual selected for this position
will be affiliated with an interdisciplinary faculty group
focused on language and literacy development and education,
and would help that group expand its work on the education of
language minority students. Since language and linguistic
analysis figures prominently in most areas of schooling, that
individual should be prepared to work with students and
faculty in other areas of education as well; for example, on
issues related to the role of language in mathematics and
science education, or cognitive and social development in
bilingual children, or language policy or testing in
education. In particular, the position will deal with
linguistic issues in the education of diverse language
minority students, and with the preparation of teachers to
work with such students in American schools.

Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in educational
linguistics, applied linguistics, linguistics, education, or
a closely related area. They should be able to demonstrate
excellence in research and teaching. Candidates should be
prepared to teach graduate level courses in research on
language teaching and learning, as well as teacher education
courses with a focus on the development of academic language
skills through various school subjects (e.g., reading and
writing, math, science, social studies, etc.) for language
minority students (e.g., Latino, Asian, American Indian,
etc.). In addition, candidates should expect to play an
active role in the development of the School's research and
instructional programs, and to collaborate with colleagues
throughout the School in scholarly and service activities.

Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, a statement of
interests and qualifications, names and addresses of at least
three references, and one or more samples of published or
unpublished writings to
