WestEd is a nonprofit research, development and service
agency dedicated to improving education and other
opportunities for children, youth, and adults, especially
those most underserved. Drawing on the best knowledge from
research and practice, we work with practitioners and policy
makers to address educationís most critical issues from early
childhood intervention to school-to-work transition, from
curriculum, instruction and assessment to safe schools.
The Center for Educational Equity is a newly organized unit
within WestEd. The purpose of this unit is to increase the
effectiveness of the work across programs. The three
programs within this unit have a primary mission to assist
those working with schools and communities with highly
diverse populations. The programs include two Comprehensive
Assistance Centers (CCs) and the Desegregation Assistance
Center (DAC). The WestEd CC for Region XI working primarily
from the San Francisco office serves districts, schools and
agencies in the 50 northern California counties and works
closely with the California Department of Education, County
Offices and others. The WestEd CC in Region IX working from
the Phoenix office provides services primarily to Arizona
through a subcontract and assists with services to other
states in Region IX. The DAC provides services to clients in
Arizona, California and Nevada primarily through the Los
Alamitos office.
CC services include assisting schools and others with
implementing effective programs under the Improving American
Schools Act. The specific programs include Title I, Title
VII, Indian Education, Migrant, Safe and Drug-Free School
programs. A primary focus of these services has been in the
areas of planning and implementing effective schoolwide
programs, developing and using assessments and evaluations of
these programs, and conducting professional development in
curriculum and instruction. The DAC provides training and
services which assist schools with the implementation of
plans to attain educational equity across race, national
origin, and gender. The services from these programs are
provided through a combination of training, consulting, and
professional development activities in partnership with
others using multiple media approaches, e.g. radio, video,
