two quick and dirty methods come to mind:
1) If you can use the TSO TEST command , run your assembler program
from there. Put breakpoints before and after the call. Issue the
LISTPSW sub-command at the breakpoints: the AMODE field will tell you
if you are in the same amode before and after

2) insert intentional abends , before and after the call to cobol. The
amode bit in the PSW will give you the amode before and after
