About Visual Basic as a tool for creating instructional productions.... It has been done. In fact, I coordinated a big project when I worked for Symantec (couple of yrs ago) that involved creating a tutorial on Norton Desktop for Windows using Visual Basic. It came out quite nice--simulated the sw pretty well and included some "you try it" kinds of exercises. But I can say it was not easy. (And I didn't do the programming--just instructional design, writing, and QA QA QA.) Lots and lots of hours of programming! And lots of little things to fix along the way.
