In response to Danny Engleman's message about FIF.........

We purchased a copy of the 'Colorbox' Fractal Image program produced
by Iterated Systems about a year ago. Initially it seems to be excellent
with much reduced file sizes. However there are a couple of downsides.
It uses a function similar in operation to Display Dib (APW) to display the
image, but is measurably slower. There is a reduction in quality but this
depends on the amount of compression used and the type of image.
e.g. A photo of a bird would reproduce well, but an Architect's plan not
so well.

This program provides compression and decompression in software-only.
However you can buy a compression board (expensive) which will
provide High Resolution (HR) images which decompress in software. We
were advised that they have HR software compression but prefer to
sell you a board! Every time you display a Iterated Systems .FIF image
in your courseware, you also have to pay them some money and put
a copyright message on the screen such as"Fractal compressed image
copyright Iterated Systems etc. etc........" in a minimum 10 point
size. At the moment we're not planning to use it until the price comes down.

Definitely worth having a look at but watch the company small print!!
Fractal Video is also good but v. expensive. Hope this is useful info.

Mark.
