I remember sending numbers to basque-l after a foreign lady asked for them but just can't find a copy of the email in my language folder. Since the basque-l archives are not available because of attempts to "mailbomb" the list, I can't search for it in basque-l either. sorry. I only found a copy of some stuff on occitan I sent to basque-l a year ago and thought perhpas you should contact Eusko Ikaskuntza ciao, Mila Parot Z. >>> Item number 10975, dated 97/05/07 12:35:44 -- AL Date: Wed, 7 May 1997 12:35:44 -0400 Reply-To: "BASQUE-L: BASQUE CULTURE Mailing List Sender: "BASQUE-L: BASQUE CULTURE Mailing List From: "Mila A. Parot Zubimendi" <ARANTZAZU@DE Subject: occitan in nafarroa hi delinquents.. is me again... i was reading about a new publication from eusko ikaskuntza and this one has to do with the many documents in the occitan language that have been found in nafarroa... according to this article.. nafarroa is one of the places where more written documents in occitan have been found.. 700 documents compared to 49 found in Aragon.. this tells about the economic importance of this occitan community predominantly gascons and dedicated to banking and commercial activities the article says that there are documents written in gascon-bearnes found in behe-nafarroa while in nafarroa-garaia the language employed was more archaic, the result of the isolation of these from the great occitan cities like bordeaux, toulouse, montpellier.. tarbe or saint'girons.. this called my attention: the convent of saint engrace in irunea became an extension of occitan politics in nafarroa.. the convent was founded in xiii by the bourgeois saint cernin and the powerful families of irunea put their daughters in these convents where they live in horror... these women were kept half a year fastening with bread and water.. they had to live in total silence and they were bleed four times a year(!!!) but wait.. according to this research and pub.of eusko ikaskuntza.. life outside the convent was even worse except for the bourgeoisie.. the article says that the bourgeoisie only used the occitan language but the popular stratta used eskuara.. and to prove this are the place names of the monastery's properties are all written in eskuara.. in other words.. the abundance of written texts in occitan is because it was the language of the bourgeoisie while eskuara was the language of the popular classes that was not written.. (the article dixit).. but it would be an important contribution to the research of this period if eusko ikaskuntza would investigate how was life for women of the popular classes.. because if they claim that life inside the convent was bad for women but worse outside except for the bourgeoisie, there most be some evidence to support this kind of statement and it would be very very important to do research on this.. see you soon... mila a. ---------- On Wed, 9 Dec 1998, Luistxo Fernandez wrote: > Perhaps the linguists out there can help me. > > I would like to know how msny Occitan-speakers (ie.
