We are in the process of moving from course accounts which expired at the
end of the semester and yearly renewal of other accounts to "lifetime"
accounts which last for the duration of the person's involvement with the
university community.  These accounts are verified against personnel and
student records.  When a person is no longer with the university, the account
is disabled for six months (to keep the disk files readily available) then
archived and removed from the system.

The most difficult part to achieve was getting (limited) access to our own
personnel records.

Eventually, we will automate the entire process so a person can sit down at
any public or private terminal and run a program which checks these same
sources to verify ID.  Exceptions will be handled on a case by case basis
greatly reducing the clerical demands on our department.
