proxies before the Christmas Holidays.
The CS&R Committee will continue its review of the White Pages
project and the corresponding paper that is being drafted by CREN.
President Fuchs will be sending a letter to a selected group of
individuals who have expressed concerns about CREN's direction.
This mailing will also include people knowledgeble about networking
and telecommunications. A similar mailing and request for
information will be sent to all of the CREN Member Reps.
The board will also be considering a proposal that CREN get an 800
number in order to better serve its membership.
The Membership Committee proposed a new dues structure for non-profit
& for-profit supporting members (organizations without BITNET services).
The new dues were approved as follows: Non-profit organizations may
retain their CREN membership in the support category for 50% of their
original dues or a minimum of $750; For-profit supporting memberships
will be charged a fee of $5,000. The committee will also be working
with the CREN staff to update the CREN Terms and Conditions.
The board directed Conklin to move ahead with the LISTSERV IP project,
and adopted a time line with specific guidelines for its completion.
The board also adopted a resolution restricting unauthorized
gateways.
Korn reported on the SMTP, the modifications that had been made,
and the status of the current updates and proposed release.
Following a discussion of the concerns that have been raised by the
membership, the board adopted the following statement in support for
NJE Development: "CREN will continue to actively support
the NJE networks, but will focus on the development of new
IP-based services to its members."

for institutions who currently do not have connections to BITNET
or the Internet, and what CREN could do to help facilitate a
"plug and play" package.
Fuchs discussed the need for a CREN-Provided Network Server to
help support some of the volunteer network services currently
provided by many member institutions. The board decided to
issue an RFP and have this awarded and completed by June 30,
1993.
Three proposals were discussed for offering university alumni
access to e-mail and what would be involved in developing the
Alumni Network (AlumNet).
