  The draft minutes of the April meeting of the CREN Board of Trustees
have been posted to LISTSERV@BITNIC.BITNET (LISTSERV@bitnic.cren.net and
LISTSERV@bitnic.educom.edu). Highlights of the meeting follow.

  The high point of the meeting was the announcement of Ken King's
appointment as Executive Director of CREN.

  The Board continued the strategic planning it began at the March
meeting, consolidating the goals it had developed at that meeting and
further refining priorities. It reviewed several new CREN projects:
* an RFP for the proposed CREN VM Network Server;
* the RFP for IP list-management software;
* development of a cooperative arrangement among CREN members (and also
    eventually those of other Cooperating Networks) to facilitate easy,
    low-cost access by alumni/ae and traveling faculty via the Internet
    to their alma maters and home campuses;
* development of low-cost, easy to use and manage platforms for
    Internet services;
* plans for assisting CREN members to obtain Internet services;
* a CREN Newsletter;
* a possible CREN 800-number.
The Board also reviewed CREN membership issues and discussed
possibilities for the FY'93-94 budget.

  The Board decided to recommend membership approval (at the next
election) of amendments to the CREN Bylaws designed to move the election
of Trustees forward, away from the Christmas holiday. The proposed
changes will require that the ballots be mailed by CREN to the Member
Representatives by November 15, which in turn requires that the
Nominating Committee's slate be announced by October 1 and petitions of
nomination received by November 1.

                                   Jim
