CREN is pleased to announce that it has signed an agreement with
L-Soft providing updated versions of LISTSERV and L-Mail to CREN members
who are currently using earlier versions of LISTSERV-NJE for VM and/or
LMail for VM. The agreement covers the period beginning now and ending
June 30,1995. In particular:

* For the period beginning now and ending June 30, 1994, CREN members
already using LISTSERV-NJE and/or LMail are eligible to receive the
new L-Soft versions of the program(s) they are now using (1.8a and/or
1.2a, respectively) at no cost to the member, upon signing an L-Soft
Software Maintenance Agreement for the relevant program(s). Those
members will have their software maintenance (including any updates)
for those programs paid for by CREN through June 30, 1994. The
maintenance agreement is for L-Soft category II support, with L-Soft
providing updates and problem fixes, but CREN, rather than L-soft,
providing the initial point of contact for problem reporting and
resolution. (More specifics on how to report problems will be
forthcoming in the next few days.) L-Soft will distribute software
updates and program fixes directly to participants on BITNET.

* From July 1, 1994 through June 30, 1995, CREN members who have
executed a maintenance agreement prior to June 30, 1994 will have the
option of continuing to receive category II maintenance through CREN
at a discount from L-Soft's current list price by a percentage which
may be as large as 50% depending on the number of CREN members
participating in this program. (We will reach the 50% level if
approximately 1/3 of the current users of this software elect to
continue. At the 50% discount level the annual category II
maintenance cost will be $1,250 for LISTSERV only, $675 for LMail
only, or $1,662.50 for both LISTSERV and LMail.) CREN will continue
to be the initial point of contact for maintenance, and CREN will be
responsible for billing members who elect to continue maintenance and
for paying L-Soft. Participants will have to notify CREN and L-Soft
of their desire to continue maintenance by June 30, 1994 in order to
be eligible for maintenance from July 1, 1994 to June 30, 1995.
Obviously it would help everyone if we knew quickly how many will
continue so that we can announce what the discount will be. Members
who elect not to continue their software maintenance from L-Soft
beyond June 30, 1994 may continue to use the versions and updates
received through that date as long as they remain CREN members but
will, of course, receive no further support or updates.

* CREN members who have already signed a software maintenance agreement
with L-Soft are eligible for the CREN discount from the termination
of their present agreement with L-Soft until June 30, 1995.

* CREN members as of December 1, 1993 who were not using one or both of
these programs at that time have the option of licensing either or
both from L-Soft upon signing an L-Soft license agreement and paying
L-Soft's standard one-time or annual license fees on or before June
30, 1994. They are then eligible for the CREN discounts on the
maintenance of this software. Organizations which become CREN
members after December 1, 1993 must be approved by L-Soft in order to
be eligible for the CREN maintenance discounts.

There are limitations to the CREN - L-Soft agreement, in addition
to those mentioned above:

* The agreement (including its price guarantees and volume discounts)
   terminates on June 30, 1995.

* The agreement does not include the TCP/IP versions (for either VM or
other operating systems) of LISTSERV or other L-Soft software, all of
which L-Soft considers to be new and separate products. In
particular, LISTSERV-TCP/IP is not considered to be a maintenance
upgrade to LISTSERV-NJE, so a separate license agreement will have to
be signed and either one-time or annual license fees paid to L-Soft
in order to obtain this product.

* Because support for LISTSERV is possible only when used on CPUs that
participate in the NJE network, the provision of services under this
agreement for LISTSERV will cease in the event that the licensed CPU
is permanently disconnected from the NJE network.

The entire CREN - L-Soft Agreement, including the version of the
L-Soft Software Maintenance Agreement appropriate for CREN member
participants in the CREN - L-Soft Agreement, will shortly be available
in plain-text from LISTSERV@BITNIC as the series of files CREN LSOFT-1,
CREN LSOFT-2, CREN LSOFT-3, and CREN LSOFT-4. Both plain-text, RTF, and
PostScript versions of the Agreement will also be available (in
sections) via ftp from info.cren.net.

Please send any questions or comments you may have on this
agreement to INFO@BITNIC (info@bitnic.cren.net), or to
conklin@educom.edu.
