Assessing the needs of blind and visually impaired computer users.
This is a questionnaire to try and discover the needs and problems blind
and visually impaired people have when using computers. The results are
to be used as part of my MSc project which I am working on in conjunction
with the Torch trust for the blind based at hallaton, near Leicester, in the
U.K.
in assessing I.T. for the blind. I have been researching access technology
for the blind and visually impaired, specifically in the area of accessing
the internet. From my research I hope to produce technical manuals to assist
blind and visually impaired people in getting connected to the internet and
actually navigating through the internet for the first time, using adaptive
technology.
When completed could you please e-mail it to: mit1sh@dmu.ac.uk
If you have any comments to make about the questionaire or project please feel
free to let me know.
Many thanks for your cooperation,
Simon Hutchinson

Stan Sadowsky might contact his local sales reps for the various CCTV
companies. People do trade up, or give up, or just decide they don't
want the device any longer. There's nothing predictable about it, but
in my experience the sales reps will all do their level best to help.

Subject: browsing the internet
From: dashiell@nadc.nadc.navy.mil (J. Dashiell)
two tools come to mind.
First the older of the two gopher.
second lynx.
Both will require a home page be constructed for your users
and your site will have to get itself registered so you can
have access to the world wide web and gopher space.
gopher has a couple tools one called veronica that a user
can use for searching and there's another called
jughead. Your users should subscribe themselves to
the tourbus list since this list is
teaching people how to browse the internet by
correspondence course and the price is $0.00
for the course.
the tourbus list is located at:
majordomo@colossus.net. A command of
subscribe tourbus in the body of the email gets it done,
and leave the subject line blank and don't put a
signature on the message either.

I've made Phil Scovell's blind text library, blt, files accessable
from my new home page at http://www.realtime.net/~shaffer/
You can even click on the hotlinks mentioned in the text files.
I added the NFB's press release on their newsline service they're
starting. We're establishing one here in Texas. It's under
"electronic newspapers" in the list. It's long so I won't post it.
I should probably add that I'll be on vacation, most likely without
web access, for a couple of weeks, returning on 08/12, so if you send
mail please be patient.
Enjoy

Re: GBX.ORG
We are proud to announce GBX.ORG: The Global Blind Exchange
Formally "CCB NET" is NOW on the INTERNET! The world's
first BBS run by and for blind people! We have not completed our
re-modeling or completed adding features but
we would like to have folks help us test. We'll be fully
completed with our system August 1 or 15. Most name serves around
the world already have or address as GBX.ORG but if not,
try our IP address: 165.90.138.192
Any experts on Telnet and Rlogin are urged to assist us in helping others
with
file transfers.
Currently, we have had great luck with Rlogin since it seems to have
the 8 bit protocols. We are still testing the system
and there will be times that it will be down but for the most
part, we're up and running!
