Subject: Help for Visually Handicapped Son
From: c23djb@kocrsv01.delcoelect.com

Hello! I've been lurking on this list for a few months now, and I haven't
seen anything like what I'm about to post. I hope it's not inappropriate!

I have a 21-year-old son who is blind (optic nerve hypoplasia). He graduated
from a public high school last summer. He never learned to use his cane very
well, and developed some pretty bad habits with it. In school, his VH
consultant never seemed to have time to work with him on mobility training,
partly because she was kept busy transcribing handouts, etc. into braille.
He is also dyslexic, and has great difficulty with left/right, directions, etc.
Anyway, this winter he worked with a mobility instructor who was contacted
through Indiana Voc. Rehab. She did a terrific job with him, and now his cane
skills are much improved. But now she says she has done all she can with
him, and that he can't travel more than a few blocks alone because he has such
poor "spatial sense." (I think that's the terminology she used.) She thinks
he'll never be able to safely cross at lighted intersections, for example,
since he is too inconsistent.

My question now is - can he get a guide dog with his lack of mobility?

If anyone out there has any suggestions of people/places to contact, please
let me know asap. I have a very upset/frustrated son at home!

Thank you very much,

Debbie

From: mlieberg@iquest.com (Marlaina Lieberg)

There are a couple of zipped files available on Compuserve through pc
file finder, which enable a lazer printer to produce braille dots in
print to be run, I think, through a thermoform machine. sorry I do not
have all the info, but I do have one of the zipped files and would be
happy to share.

I'm looking for a pulse rate monitor that will allow you to wear headphones,
and will speak to you i.e. Pulse 110....Pulse 120. My eyesight is impaired,
and I don't have the ability to utilitize pulse monitors that typical have
the display in an LCD format.

I know that many years ago, Nike made one for runners. However, I
have been unable to locate one since.

If you could e-mail me directly it would be appreciated.

Subject: Looking for a used Brailler
From: ullmann@ocws1.chemie.uni-hamburg.de (Martin Ullmann)
Organization: University of Hamburg -- Germany

Hi,

i am looking for a used Brailler (Perkis Brailler would be fine but
others are ok too) for my girlfriend (she is an O&M teacher).

This summer (Jube-July) we will visite friends near Seattle so that
we could pick it up in this area or the Brailler could be send to
their address (airmail to germany is very expensive and surfacemail
takes months).

So if anyone wants to sell a Brailler please contact me by e-mail
that we can figure out how to make the deal.

Martin

Hi, I am responding to the person who has the older blind friend in LA.
I would recommend that they contact the Westside Center for Independent
Living in West LA. I am at home and do not have the number here. It you
call 916 445 9371 and ask for the number of the Westside Center for
Independent Living they will give it to you. Tell them it is an
Independent Living Center. Good luck

I know of a blind Optimist who wants to be a bulletin editor for
his Optimist club. Does anyone know of software that he could use
to produce a bulletin? Where could his club find it and how much
would it cost. He has sighted friends who could help with
assembly, proof reading etc.

Subject: Please share this announcement
From: lcrew@andromeda.rutgers.edu (Louie Crew)
Organization: Rutgers University

I have compiled an E-Mail Directory of Lesbigay Scholars, with now more
than 450 persons listed. To be included, fill out the form below and
return it to me:

              lcrew@andromeda.rutgers.edu

Do NOT send by snail mail.

The E-Directory helps lesbigay scholars connect regarding on-going
manuscripts, conferences, and other scholarly projects. I send
the Directory to all who agree to be listed, with updates individual
by individual.

I also make available to one e-mail address by which those listed
can post announcements of interest to the entire group. But this is
not a discussion list per se--rather, a resource list.

Please share this announcement with any friends who might be interested
and with any other e-networks where forthright lesbigay scholars might
assemble qua scholars.

Thank you.
