Subject: THE VENTURE CAPITAL "GIVE-UP" This is the third in a series of informational posts dealing with the subject of capital acquisition, and strategic business planning. REVIEW ------ We previously dealt with the role of a professionally designed and presented business plan-prospectus in the acquisition of venture capital. We also examined the focus and benefits of such a plan document. We discovered that any serious search for capital would be unsuccessful in the absence of a strategic plan which focuses the resources of the organization on the mission and direction of the organization. After all, an investor wants to know what they are becomming involved with. INSTALLMENT 3: THE "GIVE-UP" ----------------------------- We now turn our attention to the subject of what the organization-enterprise offers to the marketplace of consumers and investors. We receive many inquiries which basically say: "Wow, have I got a great idea! Send money!" The common focus, as seen here, is on what the individual entrepreneur-organization wants, with little (if any) thought given to what they have to offer in return. Obviously, such an approach is self-defeating before the project even gets under way. As is the case with the lack of a business plan-prospectus, such an approach simply, and quite efficiently, proclaims to the world the entrepreneur-organization in question has no idea what they are doing. PLEASE NOTE: This approach DOES NOT send potential investors running for cover in the hills, simply because such people never bothered to leave the hills in the first place. They made the simplest of calculations, and decided better not to waste their resources, time, energy, and money. The entrepreneur self-destructs, and another potentially good idea bites the dust, because no one has any idea of what the entrepreneur-organization has of value to offer in the marketplace of goods or services. The potential investor has no idea of how their investment will earn a return. Additionally, there is no indication of what the organization will offer the investor in return for the investment. A fact of life in venture capital acquisition is that an organization is frequently required to "give-up" significant items in exchange for money invested. These "give-ups" often include a share in the organization and/or significant sharing of management control. BOTTOM LINE: ACQUISITION OF VENTURE CAPITAL OFTEN IS ACCOMPANIED BY ACQUISITION OF A NEW BUSINESS PARTNER. ================================================================== The Zurich Group specializes in strategic planning and capital acquisition.
