There is no reason why the chip could not be read everytime the time was needed. The code to read the time does not have to use the tick clock. You just need to provide the tick interrupt handler, and code for f$time. The latter could ask the clock chip for the time. Not having a reference for seconds.ticks would be a problem for things like make, but would not be too hard to fix. On initialization, f$time would set the system clock (as it does now) and zero the seconds.ticks. On each call to f$time, f$time reads the clock chip. If the clock chip minute value is greater than the the system minute value, update the system minute value, set the system seconds.ticks to zero. If the minute values are the same, read the seconds.ticks from the system clock. This assumes that the system clock never runs fast. If your system clock runs fast, you will have to change the ticks per minute value so it doesn't! -- Jesse Oberrueter (KB7PSG) joberreu@seattleu.edu kb7psg@n7hfz.wa.usa.na "For the world is hollow, and I have touched the sky!"
