My newspaper is about to buy pagination equipment and boldly go where many papers have gone before. I'm the ME and I'm concerned that the owners are being too conservative in their estimate of how many pagination terminals to buy vs how many regular word-processing terminals. Can someone out there offer me any guidance, or tell me what the experience at your paper has been? Briefly we are a 5-day-a-week paper with an A section usually 8-12 pp (12 reporters, 4 copy desk, 2 city editors, editorial page editor), a feature section 4-8 pp (4 editors), maybe 2-3 pages of sports (2 writers, 2 editors), and special auto tab maybe 32 pp (1 editor) and real estate tab 52 pp (1 editor) once a week. The news section has several zoned (extensive remake) pages each day. The features, auto and real estate sections are heavily zoned 3 ways. Bosses say we can get by with 2 terminals for features/auto/real estate, one for sports, two for news. The features stuff I'm not too worried about because so much of it is non-deadline but the news allotment seems stingy to me. Any ideas? I'd be grateful for any enlightenment. I have temporarily de-subscribed from the copyediting list because the mail has been so heavy lately, so if you could please E-MAIL your replies to me: TOUZ@aol.com Thanks again.
