I've wanted to discuss this for some time. In AP's stylebook, plays, books, songs and movies are in quotes (or italicized, depending on your newspaper's style), but is software? No! This makes no sense. Software is as much a compostion as the other items. Why not give it the same treatment. In reference to your question, I would agree that operating systems or shells like Windows shouldn't be in italics/quotes. Only the actual software program should: "Word for Windows," "WillMaker 5" for the Macintosh, DOS-based "Flight Simulator," etc. I've been meaning to call up AP's stylemeister (Norm Goldstein?) and share this with him but keep getting waylaid by stories, headlines and page designs. Pesky things. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Craig Branson (813) 687-7030 cbranson2@aol.com Copy editor, The Ledger, Lakeland, Fla.
