This posting may be of interest to anyone involved in the storage and
dissemination of information gathered at conferences. Sorry if it's of
less relevance to others. In recent years we've tried to communicate
updates in various professional areas to one of our main user groups -
teachers of English. We've done this by radio - either by recording the
whole conference and then using a narrator to link selected extracts, or,
probably a better radiophonic option, interviewing speakers and
participants. Transcribing what was said has always been too time
consuming - despite the value of written backup for transient radio
programmes. (Conference reports tend to get circulated only to
participants.) This coming weekend, 4th to 6th September, we're trying
something new. The British Council is holding in Switzerland a
conference on teaching English for specific purposes. Many of the
participants will be from Central and Eastern Europe and the Former
Soviet Union. We'll be attempting to post summaries (text + audio +
picture) of the sessions, with input from anyone who wants, and a
discussion group on points raised for a few weeks after the conference.
At this time I have no idea whether it will work - and I'm aware that
many of the problems will not be technical but editorial: in the heat of
the moment how do you select which bits of information are important?
