Olatoye,

In response to your questions:

>	I am interested in information, sources and bibliography on the
>	effect of radio on rural communities vis a vis education, rights,
>	development and whatever else is out there.

I will send you a copy of AMARC's publications lists on Monday.
There may be something there of interest to you. I'll also send
you more information about AMARC, if you send a postal address.

AMARC has a documentation centre but as we are a small organization
it is not on line nor can I send you a bibliography via email or
even the post. There is quite a lot of original research in the centre
about radio in Africa. To oversimplify it, African rural radio has
suffered from the fact that it has usually been conceived as a national
rural radio service, with production and transmission facilities in the
capital. They were also designed to serve the interests of
"modernization", which can be understood as interests of the urban
centres (promotion of export crops, for example) rather than the rural
areas.

Radio has been more successful in Latin America, where control has been
located locally within independent radio stations and radio served local
interests. I have seen some writing by Luis Ramiro Beltran in which he
talks about "development suppport communication" and "alternative
communication for development".

Development support communication seeks to backup previously-defined
communication goals while alternative communications for development
seeks to involve people in the process of defining, and questioning,
their community's goals.

Sorry I can't be of more help. If you are ever in Montreal, you're
welcome to check out our documentation centre.

Bruce
