The AMARC Pan-European Conference of Community Radio Broadcasters
Ljubljana, Slovenia 15 - 18 September 1994
An invitation to be a founding member of AMARC-Europe and to join an
international network of community radio broadcasters
One Europe
As Europe comes together community radio broadcasters face new
challenges and new opportunities. Concentration of media ownership,
new technology and regulatory change are just some of the reasons why
community based radio broadcasters need to co-operate. The Ljubljana
conference will provide an opportunity for community radio
broadcasters to reflect and respond to the new media landscape.
Many Voices
There are over 1500 community radios in Europe today involving over
50,000 staff and volunteers, and providing an independent and
alternative voice to the big media corporations. At the first pan-
European conference of the World Association of Community Radio
Broadcasters between 150 and 200 participants from local community
radios in 26 European countries will gather in Ljubljana to launch a
network of European co-operation and mutual support.
Democracy and Access to Communication
The conference theme, Democracy and Access to Communication, will
address the key issues in Europe today and the role which community
and participatory radio can play. The event will be workshop based
with the objective of formulating concrete resolutions and proposals
and sharing practical skills and experience.
Conference topics
- New sound broadcasting technologies - implications for local and
community radio
- A third sector of radio - the European Community Radio Charter
- The pluralism debate - community radio as an alternative to media
concentration
- Voices against intolerance - radio as a tool to confront racism
and xenophobia
- Is radio training necessary - the place of training in community
radio

and community radio

community radio
- Inter-regional co-operation and solidarity in the world-wide
community radio movement

programme exchange

lobbying strategies

A new European network
Pan-European co-operation is already underway. AMARC has established a
Working Group of community radio broadcasters from thirteen European
countries and has assisted with practical projects for co-operation in
training, programme exchange and representation. AMARC is also a
window on the world for European community radio broadcasters with
strong links in Africa, Latin America, Asia, Oceania and North
America. The next AMARC World Conference will take place in
Senegal in January 1995. AMARC-Europe will:
- represent the community radio sector to European institutions;
- monitor developments in regulation, funding and technology;
- inform members on these and other issues of concern to the sector;
- institute and co-ordinate training on a pan-European basis;
- develop programme co-productions by community radios across Europe;
- assist community radios in Eastern Europe and the developing world
AMARC-Europe will be launched in Ljubljana. Its members will be
community radios, associations and production groups. Join us in
Ljubljana and be in at the start of a new European initiative for the
community radio sector.
