WAVES FOR FREEDOM
"Waves for Freedom" is the general theme of AMARC's Sixth World
Conference, which will take place in Dakar, Senegal, from January
23 to 29, 1995.
The event, to be held in a continent racked by unprecedented levels
of economic, social and political crisis, will undoubtedly provide
an excellent opportunity to consider the problematics of radio at
the service of development. AMARC 6 will offer a special focus on
the different methodological facets of community-based
participation in development, radio technologies and the
establishment of networks for exchange and for South-South and
North-South solidarity.
Since January of this year, a local organizing committee (LOC) has
been at work preparing for AMARC 6, where more than 400
participants from all continents are expected. This committee
comprises a pan-African NGO network (FAVDO), a collective of
Senegalese NGOs interested in setting up community radios
(CORACOM), the Panos Institute, Senegal's Radio-Television
nationale (RTS) and representatives from the local press, including
Sud Quotidien, as well as various networks and resource persons
with experience in radio communication.
The LOC is working with the close cooperation and support of
AMARC's Secretariat in Montreal, Canada. Priorities for the coming
weeks will be to subdivide and link thematic guidelines in order to
develop precise subjects for the conference's workshop discussions
as well as to prepare documents to stimulate thinking regarding all
issues linked to the AMARC 6 main and underlying themes.
We are inviting all people and institutions interested in greater
access to the airwaves and the development of community radio
throughout the world -- and especially in Africa -- to attend our
upcoming event in Dakar, Senegal. It will be a novel opportunity
to make a significant contribution to the emergence of free and
community radios in a continent still haunted by dictators and
where young democracies remain fragile and even feverish.

The cost of the conference has not yet been determined but we
plan to offer a package including registration, hotel and two
meals a day for the week. The package will likely cost between
US$500 and US$850, depending on the standard of accommodation you
choose.
