The Catholic Church in Mozambique is going ahead with a proposed
community radio station, in preparation for the country's
elections of October 1994. The station will be set up in the
Archdiocese of Beira and will reach local communities situated
within 500 km.

According to Sr. Lucy Rodrigues, coordinator of the Communication
dept. of the Pretoria-based Interregional Meeting of Bishops of
Southern Africa (IMBISA), people will benefit by participating in
the entire process of making radio programmes. Education at all
levels will be provided, but first of all political education, to
enable people to understand and make their own meaning of
democratisation, and encourage responsibility and participation
in the running of social and political affairs.

Meanwhile, two FM radio stations have recently come on the air in
the Catholic Diocese of Fada N'Gourma and the Archdiocese of
Ouagadougou in Burkina faso. The latter broadcasts since October
2 1993, and can be received within a radius of 40 km.
