A RADIO NEWS SERVICE
Inter Press Service (IPS) and AMARC have proposed a joint
project to develop a news service specially suited to the needs
of radio broadcasters.
The IPS Third World News Agency is the 6th largest news
agency in the world. It produces an independent daily news and
feature service that is distributed in 11 languages to 97
countries. With a focus on news by about and for the people of
the South and with a special interest in issues concerning women
and the environment, the IPS service is a progressive alternative
to that offered by other major news agencies. However, the
service is designed to suit the needs of the print media and has
to be completely rewritten in a broadcast style for use in radio
newscasts.
The AMARC/IPS project seeks to provide radio stations with a
daily 4,000 word service with regional and international news
delivered in text form via computers and modems. The news will be
specially edited for inclusion in radio newscasts.
In addition while the print media are generally concentrated
in major cities, radio is present in smaller towns. Thus, the
project also foresees extending IPS's current distribution system
to smaller towns using computers and modems. This distribution
system will also be available to other specialised news services
and organisations wishing to reach radio stations.
AMARC and IPS hope to launch the Spanish-language version of
the new service before the end of 1994. English and French
versions will follow.
