Since it was incorporated as a non-profit, fee-based service in December 1992, World Radio Transcription Services has been providing a timely, online source of news on economic policy, political/constitutional change, social policy, the environment and other human rights-related topics to thousands of nettors. As the name implies, WRTS' principal source is shortwave radio broadcasts which are consistently monitored from which verbatim country reports are prepared frequently within a day or two of the original date of transmission. Currently, those stations include Radio Moscow World Service (including its 20-minute feature news programme heard on weekdays, "Commonwealth Update"), China Radio International in Beijing, Radio Japan/NHK's half-hour programme, "News Round," also on weekdays and finally Radio Habana Cuba. In the past, however, others have included Radio Exterior de Espana, Radio Nederland and Swiss Radio International. In the future more will no doubt be added. In all cases, written permission has been given to WRTS to prepare the reports which total over 2000 to date. In addition to receiving several files each week, subscribers will have free, unlimited access to WRTS' archives for the duration of the subscription. All news items have been indexed in an electronic database which supports boolean searching through a number of access points -- date and time of broadcast, source, nation(s) involved, region, general subject heading and keywords within the text. Upon receipt of a request, a report will be sent off within a week. For those wishing in sampling this service, a trial offer lasting a week is available at no cost and with no obligation. Regards, Andrew Waldie. SOME COMMENTS FROM READERS We've had numerous favourable comments on the quality of the transcriptions produced by World Radio Transcription Services. The gen.shortwave conference is regularly in the top 10 conferences read on Web (the Canadian member of the APC), and has been for the past year and a half, since the conference was first set up. Readers of gen.shortwave have let us know that they find the careful organization of the information, and how easy it is to find current reports on different regions, extremely useful. (Maureen James, Web User Service Co-ordinator) I have had gen.shortwave conference on my `visit list' ever since I joined the GlasNet about 18 months ago. Your reports have always been among the important sources of information. They are solid and frequent enough, the choice is representative and unbiased. Your timely and carefully focused attention to the developments in various regions of the CIS is particularly valued here. Moreover, at times of crisis and ensuing information blockades, your WRTS, along with other services on the APC networks, have proved to provide for essential channels of communication for many organisations and individuals in the non-profit sector. (Vassily Balog, GlasNet user, Russian Federation) Take this as a note of thanks and support. I taught a course in Russian media (in Russian) this semester and I supplemented it with copies of items from your reports. I will no doubt continue to use them even more next academic year. (Robert Beard, Program in Linguistics, Bucknell University)
