CALL FOR PAPERS
Canadian Communication Association, Annual Conference
Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities
May 31 to June 3, 1998
University of Ottawa
CONFERENCE THEME
Our next conference in Ottawa will be organized around the theme of
"Communication, the Public Good and Civil Culture." This theme seems
particularly timely in a conjuncture of continuing fiscal austerity,
increased globalization, and recurrent controversies on the media's
promotion of dubious social values and undermining constituted authority,
while at the same time providing ever larger, global audiences. The
suggested theme is indicative of the organizers' hope to provide
structured occasions for further discussion of these issues, but
obviously does not limit proposals from members to the suggested theme
only. We propose nonetheless for members' consideration for panels and
sessions, such sub-themes as the following:
* communication, globalization and citizenship
* civil society as a neglected component of the public sphere
* whither "the public good" in the context of postpublic interests?
* the forms, patterns and topics of Canadian civil discourse
* new information technologies in civil society
* the state of communication research in Canada and prospects for the
21st century
* the increasing role of organizations in the context of the retreat of
the welfare state
PARTICIPATION
The conference is open to all registered members of the Canadian
Communication Association (CCA). Members may participate in the
following manners:
* by submitting proposals for individual papers which will be reviewed
and organized into panels by the conference organizers;
* by setting up a session of papers on a unified theme or subject;
* by setting up a panel or a roundtable discussion on a common subject.
Members who want to participate in any of the above capacities should sub=
mit:
* Identification of those contributing to the proposed activity;
* An abstract (one half page, single spaced) outlining the problem to be
analyzed in the paper and briefly discussing its context. The abstract
must be presented in both English and French. The entire abstract shoul=
d
thus not be longer than one page;
* An indication of any audio-visual equipment needed;
* A disk version of the abstract on either IBM WordPerfect 5.1 (or more
recent version) or Macintosh Word 6.0.
ACCOMMODATION
Since accommodation is not the responsibility of the CCA, information
regarding accommodation will be sent to all members of the CCA via the
Congress organizers.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
The CCA has limited funds to help defray part of the travel costs of
student participants. The funds will be dispensed according to a formula
taking into consideration the distance traveled. Students who wish to
apply for this financial assistance should so indicate in a note
submitted along with their abstracts.
