PRESS RELEASE
NEW HORIZONS
Handbook for trainers working for more 'colour' in the media
In the rapidly changing society of today's Europe, ethnic minorities,
immigrants andrefugees are often the most deprived. With different
ancestral heritage and traditions, they feel marginalised in their
newly adopted countries, the object of racism and xenophobia
and facing problems with access to the labour market. We risk
creating a society with groups of people who feel alienated and
excluded and who cannot support themselves or their families.
The media, especially television and radio, have enormous power to
influence and direct opinion. The way in which they represent these
new communities is critical to the future coexistence and harmony of
society, to freedom of expression and the exercise of civil
rights. They can play a key role in shaping the public perception of
social reality by promoting integration of migrants, refugees and
ethnic minorities.
NEW HORIZONS is the result of a team effort based on concrete ideas
and experiences exchanged during a series of workshops organised in
London, Hilversum, Stockholm, Berlin and Utrecht by participants in
six media training projects 'On Air/More Colour in the Media' partly
funded by the Employment Community Initiative of the European
Commission (Horizon/Now).
The handbook is designed to be a source book for coordinators and
trainers of national and transnational projects as well as all media
organisations and institutions interested in this field, to help
overcome many of the basic obstacles likely to be faced in realising
multicultural training/employment projects in the media.
