The Free Nigeria Movement (FNM), a global grassroots based
movement
working for the restoration of freedom to Nigeria and its people
views with extreme
apprehension the latest diversionary tactic employed by the
illegitimate and morally
repugnant General Sanni Abacha led Nigerian military dictatorship
which is holding
over 100 million Nigerian citizens hostage.
The recent announcement by the illegal dictatorship that it
had discovered
and prevented a recent coup attempt allegedly being planned against
the person of
Sanni Abacha is on its own merit an amusing concept, if not for the
fatal
consequences suffered by some of the alleged coup plotters.
The FNM wishes to remind the Nigerian people that General
Sanni Abacha is
himself the main treasonable felon who is yet to face the full
consequences of his
actions, and is therefore in no position to accuse anyone else of a
similar offense.
For those who have forgotten, Abacha has a number of documented
cases of
treasonable felony against him, with the most serious being his
illegal dissolution of
the electoral mandates of the democratically-elected
Representatives of the Nigerian
people on November 17th, 1993, and imposition of himself as the
perpetual (and
most brutal) dictator of Nigeria. Obviously, this offense on its own
merit constitutes
not only perceived, but actual coup plotting and execution.
Therefore, his
charges of coup plotting against others are not only totally
ridiculous and
hypocritical, but also another grave insult to the collective
dignity of the Nigerian
people.
The FNM believes that this new drama totally conceived and
acted by his
illegal dictatorship is only another diversionary ploy to secure the
grip of General
Abacha on the levers of state power which he illegally seized for
himself on
November 17th, 1993. From all indications, Abacha has been
systematically
attempting to render all real, imagined and potential opposition he
has access to
powerless by any means necessary, including murder. As part of this
plan, he has
since 1994 illegally detained in solitary confinement the
duly-elected and legitimate
President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bashorun Moshood K.O.
Abiola,
murdered in detention the civilian widely believed to have the most
formidable
political machine in the country, Major-General Shehu Musa YarAdua
(Rtd.),
imprisoned for life on trumped up coup plotting charges the only
military ruler in
Nigerias history to voluntarily hand over power to a
democratically-elected civilian
government, General Olusegun Obasanjo (Rtd.), and bribed,
intimidated,
imprisoned, exiled or murdered all the other democratically elected
Representatives
of the Nigerian people and other voices of opposition.
The FNM also believes that this latest round of eliminations is
indicative of
the general sense of instability, insincerity and insecurity within
the Nigerian military
establishment, and based on our intelligence reports and historical
precedent,
believes the situation is going to become much worse in the coming
period, with a
large number of officers and men of the Nigerian armed forces, as
well as the civic
society slated to lose their lives in order to consolidate Abachas
rule. The FNM
therefore calls on all the loyal and patriotic officers and men of
the Nigerian armed
forces to prevent the imminent catastrophe at hand by declaring
their unwavering
loyalty and support for the duly-elected government of Nigeria
composed of all the
duly elected Representatives of the Nigerian people elected under
the auspices of
the 1989 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, including
the duly-elected
President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal
Republic of
Nigeria, His Excellency, President Moshood Kasimawo Olawale Abiola,
and refusing
to follow any orders at the pain of death issued by dictator Sanni
Abacha and the
criminal element of the Nigerian armed forces which constitutes his
support base.
The FNM however believes that all is not lost for General Sanni
Abacha at
this time, and that the only way he can still have any hope in
redeeming himself in
the history of Nigeria is by immediately releasing all political
hostages he holds,
including President Abiola, and then negotiating with the
duly-elected and legitimate
President Abiola led government on terms of amnesty for him and his
fellow
treasonable felons.
Speaking on the issue of the alleged coup plot, the President
of the FNM, Mr.
Tunde Okorodudu stated inter alia that Abacha has again displayed
his lust for
power by eliminating the individual who has officially been his main
partner-in crime,
...if he can do this to his own deputy, then truly, who in Nigeria
is Abacha
answerable to? The FNM 1st Vice-President, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammed
regretted
that Abacha is ...single-handedly doing more to destroy the fragile
unity of the
country than over 100 million Nigerian combined ever have, all just
to keep himself in
power permanently. For his own part, the FNM Secretary-General, Mr.
Mukhtar
DanIyan stated that When you help Satan prepare dinner, dont be
surprised at
being served as the main course. ...all those still working for
Abacha should realize
that to him, their lives are not worth a grain of salt. The
National Treasurer of the
FNM, Prince Ayo Ajisebutu for his own part expressed a deep sense
of pain that yet
more precious Nigerian blood, innocent or not, is being wasted for
the sole purpose
of keeping one man, General Abacha in power.
Long Live Freedom, Long Live the Free Nigeria Movement, Long Live
the Federal Republic of Nigeria!!!
