50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
On December 10, 1948, the General Assembly of the United
Nations adopted without dissent the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights. For the past 5o years, the document has
influenced the actions of individuals and governments, and
has served as a standard for the international community in
judging the observance of "human rights and fundamental
freedoms for all without distinction as to race, gender,
language or religion." It has been invoked in international
treaties, including the International Covenant on Economic,
Social and Cultural Rights, the International Covenant on on
Civil and Political Rights, the Convention on the
Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women,
the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the
International Covenant on the Elimination of All Forms of
Racial Discrimination, as well as in the current work to
establish an International Criminal Court.
The historic impact of the UDHR has been compared to that of
the U.S Bill of Rights. These first ten amendments to the
U.S. Constitution, adopted as a whole on December 15, 1791,
guarenteed the rights and freedoms of Americans and defined
the jurisdiction of the domestic government.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the UDHR, students
in grades 9-12 nationwide are invited to write an essay that
examines the ways in which the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights and the U.S. Bill of
Rights, which in some cases address similar issues, work to
preserve and enforce human rights.
