feature I'd like to see when formatting refs

First off, I want to say that I just love endnote and think it's a
great program.

I use endnote to insert references into text; I don't use System 7; I don't
use the plug-in module; I don't import/export references from other
databases; I don't manage a monstrous list of refs.

I like the way you can put in the reference marker by typing it in yourself.
Here is where I'd like to see something a bit different. You can
do something like [Jones, 1992] and if there are no papers with
Jones in 1992, it will work peachy. If there are refs like
Jones, 1992; Smith and Jones, 1992; and Jones, Smith, and
Johnson, 1992 in the database, it won't format it cause there are
multiple choices and so it needs the ref number to go along with it,
which is OK. But I naturally like to write without stopping (ie. not
having to switch applications or windows, scroll, highlight, copy,
switch back to document, and paste) sometimes, and I remember a
lot of papers by the first author (but not the ref number). Would
it be possible to be able to make the search process stupider
sometimes so endnote will find fewer ambiguities (ie. look only
at first author for searches) (also recognition/ignoring "et al."
would be neat). I think this could make endnote seem more transparent
when typing and reading preformatted drafts.

Don't get me wrong. I like being able to do searches by any author or
keyword and such to get a list of refs that I have somewhere piled up
on or near my desk, but sometimes I'd just like to be able to do a 1st
author search, especially to format the paper.

Does anyone else think like me? Would it be hard to implement? Is it
already possible now, and I'm just too dumb to see it in the manual?
Is it impractical?
