How much new work would have to be done for copyright not >to be breached? > >Mark Allen I doubt that that is the right question to ask. Once a derivative work (i.e. copied in some form from an existing work), always a derivative work. There is no escape, however much one tinkers, short of starting again from scratch. The relevant question is whether there is copyright in the source material and if so, whether permission can be secured. If the source material is public domain or freeware, there is of course no problem. A second copyright question is whether the compilation as such is subject to copyright over and above whatever rights exist in the source material incorporated in the data base. That question mostly concerns who intend commercial exploitation of the base. EJAN MACKAAY
