Endnote2 (win) freezes during compression

Endnote2 for windows is freezing intermittently during the compression 
that takes place when a library from which records have been deleted is 
closed (but not all the time).  Has anyone else run into this or have 
ideas about what the problem could be.  It is running on a Zenith 486-25 
laptop with 8 megs of ram, windows 3.1, and dos 6.x.
