I purchased recently the EndNote Plus and Endlink 2.0 in order to get references into papers with minimal extra work. Now, when I started to look at ways to import the data of my area into EndNote, I was quite shocked: all the import filters are ASCII ONLY! That means that all typographical information is lost in the transfer and have to be added manually... This is just unacceptable in my area of science, where latin names, super- and subscripts etc. are found in almost all titles of papers. Having to go through a database of e.g. 15 000 references just to correct the titles to what they should be is a huge task, and does not pay the time used for it, and without the actual papers at hand the result would not be totally correct either. I have to say that I am most frustrated because of this limitation (if I had known it, I would never had purchased EndNote or any other reference database), and also most surpriced because researchers obviously accept this kind of inconvenience. At least I am already very badly short of time in research business and this kind of extra work feels totally mindless. Because the information is already there, in the original papers, there should absolutely be a way to transfer the references without losing crucial information! I do not know what might be the best practical solution to this problem, but wouldn't it be possible for the bibliografic information providers to export the data in the native binary file format of Endnote (and other Databases), that is, already as a database? Or even better, IS there already some bibliographic source having this ability? If there is, please let me know! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reijo Ronkko University of Helsinki, Dept. of General Microbiology, Ph. Lic.
