G'day All! This may be of interest to some of the Australian readers of these groups, though its in no way limited to Australians. (Lets hope this get to all these groups this time) To subscribe, send a message to listserv@fatboy.gas.unsw.EDU.AU. (Note, include . at end) with subscribe geogphys-l in the body of the message. To post an article address it to geogphys-l@fatboy.gas.unsw.EDU.AU. IAG Study Group for Physical Geography, GIS and Remote Sensing Mailing List. A group of physical geographers met at the recent Institute of Australian Geographers(IAG) conference in Townsville to initiate a study group of physical geographers and GIS and remote sensing specialists interested in applications of these techniques to physical geography. We aim to include climatologists, biogeographers, geomorphologists, hydrologists, managers, conservationists, and anyone else interested in a knowledge of natural environments and their human modification and management. At present the IAG has five study groups, none of which are of primary interest to physical geographers. Nevertheless there was over a day of interesting papers on physical geography at the IAG conference, and increasing involvement of physical geographers within the Institute. The study group aims to foster better communication and cooperation within the discipline. The aim is to complement existing groups, such as the Australia and New Zealand geomorphology group and the climatology group, not compete against them. One way of fostering such communication is the establishment of this discussion list. Of course, participation in discussion and in the study group is not limited to IAG members. Other activities of the group will include promotion of sessions and fieldtrips specialising in physical geography at IAG Annual Conferences, promotion of postgraduate student involvement in IAG, and fostering better links between industry and academic geographers. If the group is a success then specialist meetings and/or special publications may follow. We are also able to apply to the IAG for funds to support group activities. We would particularly like to encourage items on the discussion list from post- graduate students who feel a bit isolated in their institutions and discussion from outside universities, that may lead to better cooperation between universities and other organisations. Later Ed
