where is the source of a river ?

could anyone know how to define the source of a river? is it the longest path of water running from its junction with the sea, or is it related to the amount of water flow? how does this concept evolved along time? since necerily names of the river must have locally changed when a definition occured sincerely Patrick -- Bien � toi Patrick
