Need help with binary word length.

I have a TI-85 and need to do binary arithmetic on it for my
Microprocessors class. The problem is that we use 8-bit word
length in class, but the TI-85 seems to be unalterably set to
16-bit. Can it be changed ? If so, how ?

 Thanks.
