Graph-TI - TI-82 Ownership

A big advantage to the graphing calculator is student ownership.
My experience has been that when a student does not own his/her calculator,
it does not get used.

I teach a one semester course in finite math followed by a one semester
calculus course for business students. In the first semester, I teach them
how to program the finance formulas so that they do not need the cheaper
business analyst calculators. They also use the TI-82 in the required
statistics course.

I teach a one-semester calculus to business students, and am
have just begun to require that my students use TI82s. My
students either buy their TI82s from stores or through me for about
$81. Some students are objecting to having to spend $81 for a
calculator for one course when their other teachers already
require them to have business analyst calculators. I would like to
know if other college teachers have found a way that is cheaper
for the student. That is, do some colleges or math department buy
them and rent them? Do some bookstores rent them to students,
or buy them back and sell used ones? I would value any replies
(to berresfrd@aurora.liunet.edu) with details of how your college
handles this problem, and how well it works. In particular, what is
the rental or buyback price? What do you do about lost
calculators, etc.

I agree totally. I teach a course called "Pre-Calculus" mathematics
in the high school and also teach at a community college. When a
student owns his/her calculator, there is a big difference in attitude
as to how a student perceives the course and also, because of the
ownership involved, there is more of an active interest in what
he/she does with it. I have used the graphing calculators for over
5 years, and my high school students buy their own as well as my
college students. I have never had any student, in all my classes,
that told me that the graphing calcuator was not helpful or a waste
of time. Many surveys I have had from my students in both ends of
the learning spectrum, reported an increased level of interest and
many of them went on further in their studies. Not one of my students
ever offered to sell back their graphing calculator. They took pride
in what they did with it and didn't want to part with it.
