Texas Instruments is holding a Technology Preview of new calculator technology at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Francisco which began on Wednesday, January 4. This is NOT a product announcement. We are not giving the product a name nor are we demonstrating the complete capabilities. The following information is all that is available at this time. At the Joint Mathematics Meetings, we are distributing a small brochure. The brochure has a full size photo of the concept product and the following text: (front cover) TECHNOLOGY PREVIEW (page one) Listening to educators is what we at Texas Instruments do best. Educators are saying there is a need for an instructional tool that addresses mathematics more broadly. A tool that helps students explore the specific subject, and motivates them to begin to understand and visualize the links and relationships within mathematics. Educators that envision such a tool say that it should: o Handle a broad range of mathematics, from algebra through calculus, including geometry and statistics o Be easy to learn and use at all grade levels. o Perform symbolic manipulation. o Have interactive geometry. o Have 3-D graphing capability. o Incorporate real world data through the Calculator-Based Laboratory(tm) (CBL(tm)) System for math and science o Be accessible enough to be used spontaneously. o Be affordable. And, most important, such a device would be familiar to teachers that use the TI-82. (page two) This technology builds on the easy-to-use foundation of the TI-82 adding powerful instructional capabilities previously available only through the use of expensive computers with mathematics software. (screen 1 - A partial screen showing geometry) (caption) Interactive Geometry. (screen 2 - A partial screen showing a 3D graph) (caption) 3-D Graphing. As with all of our instructional products, this device would be easy-to-use and have the right combination of features and functions: Texas Instruments: First with the best -- yet again. (outside back cover) If you want complete information when this device is announced, call 1-800 TI-CARES. Or contact us through our e-mail address: ti-cares@ti.com --- end of brochure copy --- We also wrote a Frequently Asked Questions sheet. The text follows: TECHNOLOGY PREVIEW INFORMATION Q Why is Texas Instruments doing this "Technology Preview"? A Many educators are asking TI for more lead-time awareness about products with new technology being developed for the educational community. We want to help educators, like yourself, with planning for the 1995-1996 school year. Q When can I learn more? A We will publicly announce a product using this new technology about six months before it goes into production. At that time, we will also notify everyone on our mailing list. If you do not already receive the Eightysomething! newsletter, please fill out an information card so that we can notify you about the product. Q When will a product using this technology be available? A It will NOT be available in time for back-to-school 1995; however, we plan to have it available well before back-to-school 1996. Q How much will this product cost? A This product is expected to sell for about $200. The ViewScreen(tm) version of this product will sell for about $400. Q What will the product be called? A We will state the name of this product when it is publicly announced. Q When can I borrow a prototype to evaluate? A We will have a limited number on loan units after the product is announced. Q Will this product have Derive(tm) built in? A This product will have a symbolic manipulation system that is being jointly developed by TI and the authors of Derive, who are with Soft Warehouse, Inc. Q Will the product have Cabri Geometry II(tm) built in? A This product will have an interactive geometry system that is being jointly developed by TI and the authors of Cabri Geometry II, who are with the University of Joseph Fourier. Q Will this product be allowed on the SAT and AP Calculus exams? A This product has a QWERTY keyboard. Based on current calculator restrictions, it would not be allowed on the SAT and AP Calculus exams. Q What courses would be appropriate for this new product? A We expect the feature set will align best with high school algebra through calculus, including geometry. ---- end of FAQ text --- If you would like to receive a brochure on this technology concept, please call 1-800-TI-CARES and ask for the Technology Preview brochure. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Texas Instruments Calculators TI GRAPHING PRODUCTS TEAM P.O.
