Subject: Punjab Returns to International Air Map
"Amritsar, February 22 (PTI) Punjab was brought again on the
International Air Map after a gap of about ten years with the
introduction of bi-weekly international flights from Rajasansi
Airport to eight countries. The first connecting flight of Indian
airlines Boeing 737, carrying eleven passengers to different
international destinations and 23 domestic passengers to Delhi took
off at 0345 hrs on Tuesday, February 22nd morning.
The bi-weekly flights of Indian Airlines are operating under Air
India flights providing connections to passengers travelling on
Air-India flights to London and other international destinations.
Immigration and customs formalities for passengers travelling from
here were completed at Rajasansi itself. Out of eleven
international passengers including a handicapped woman, four were
booked for Frankfurt, two each for Hongkong, Toronto and New York
and one for London. The flights, scheduled for Mondays and
Tuesdays, have been planned so as to afford through connections
over Delhi to popular cities of the world with sizable Punjabi
population.
Air-India said the flights were introduced on the long pending
demands of Punjabis, especially those living overseas as they faced
hardship in boarding and landing at Delhi."

Subject: Reg. Roja
Roja is probably the best film of 1993. It is directed by Mani Rathnam and
won a National award. It is essentially a Tamil movie but was dubbed in Hindi
and released in the rest of the country sometime in Oct/Nov (Diwali time).
The film itself is a love-story in the setting of the Kashmir problem. The
film starts off with the arrest of a dreaded terrorist in Kashmir by the
Indian military (brilliantly shot). The film then immediately cuts to a
small village in Tamil Nadu where it focusses on a girl called Roja
(Madhoo). A cryptologist (I forget the actor's name - but he is now a rage)
from Madras comes to see her sister for marriage but finally gets married
to Roja (she hates it). They move back to the city - the misunderstandings
get sorted out and then he has to go to Kashmir for solving a leak in the
ciphers (The computer angle comes from the writer of the story who as my
Tamil friends told me is a scientist/computer engineer in real life).
Both of them go there and our hero gets kidnapped by the terrorists (led by
Pankaj Kapoor in an amazing role), so that they can use him as a bargaining
chip to get their associate released. The rest of the film focusses on two
aspects: the relationship between Roja's husband and the terrorists and
Roja's attempts (extremely credible) to get him released.
Simple story - but the way it has been directed is amazing. I guess that is
Mani Rathnam's touch. In fact Mani's next film Thiruda Thiruda is an amazing
technical accomplishment, but because he's made it like a typical Hindi
masala movie which has everything and thus is too long and extravagant, it
hasn't done too well.
Anyway, the music of the film is ultimately the best part. A. R. Rahman,
the director is only 26 years old and has composed five numbers, each one of
which is different from the usual Tamil/Hindi film music and terrific.
Mani's picturisations of these songs has further enhanced their appeal,
especially Rukmini, Rukmini. The music has set all kinds of records. It is
the first time that songs dubbed in Hindi have reached no 1 on all the radio
and TV charts. The CDs are selling in the black market and are just not
available. And many people are going to see the film only because
they've heard the music.
The Hindi version of the film was released in Bombay without any fanfare
around Diwali. Its fame spread by word of mouth and by the month's end, it
was up in more than four theatres and was going house-full throughout. I saw
it in Hindi and then (though I don't understand Tamil) saw it again in Tamil
at Aurora (Bombay Tamils should now this theatre) and then even went and saw
Thiruda Thiruda which means Chor-Chor in Tamil. Other good Mani Rathnam films:
Nayakan, Anjali. (I haven't seen his earlier work).

Subject: Reg. Roja
Someone requested for a review of "Roja". Since i saw it very recently,
here is what i felt about it.
First of all, I saw the hindi version ( which is dubbed from the
original Tamil one , director is Mani Ratnam ).
I found the movie quite good ( much better than the general stuff doled
out these days ). Music is very good and I loved one song in particular
("choti si asha"(hindi) / "chinna chinna aasai"(tamil) ).
other songs in the hindi version are quite bad.
I will not write about the story here as some of you will be definately
seeing this movie in the future. The movie is patriotic and is about
an engineer who gets kidnapped in kashmir. The story looses its punch in the
hindi version and if you know Tamil, dont even consider seeing it in Hindi.
The story gets quite melodramatic at times, but overall it was a good movie.

Subject: Roja ..... Movie review
Following is my review of Movie Roja. I found that one person
wanted this in INDIA DIGEST.
Roja was made in Tamil and dubbed in Hindi and Telugu. It became very
popular in Tamilnadu after its relaese. The highlights of the movie
are the music and the photography. The music direction is by Rahmann
a very young music director who poses real challenge to Ilayaraja in
South. The first song 'chinna chinna asai' is a very good song and is
photographed well. It also introduced two new stars to the Tamil
cinema (Aravind -Hero , Madhubala- heroin). Both are quite popular
now in Tamil and Malayalam. There is also a controversial scene in
which many old ladies dance for a sexy tune in the night around
a water falls. The movie was given one of the president award of
that year .
The story revolves around a newly married couple, Kashmir terrorists
and Indian army officials. The ending is good. The movie should be
watched in a Cinema theatre as the photography cannot be enjoyed
in a video. It is a good movie and one can go with a family for
this movie.

Manivanan Janardhanan's query regarding an authentic Telugu word for
Bandicoot raises an intriguing problem. There probably can be no other
word since, according to the Yule/Burnell HOBSON-JOBSON (New edition,
revised by William Crooke, London, 1903) p 58 the term Bandicoot was a
corruption of the Telugu pandi-kokku, literally, "pig-rat".
I am not a scholar of Telugu language. I am merely citing an often
useful reference work. The work's transliteration of the Telugu may be
inconsistent with modern usage, but it appears to be the case that the
two Telugu words are the source of "bandicoot".

Hi,
I was reading about the travel to India in this group and just want to add my
two cents worth. for those of you staying close to the Canadian border (Detroit,
Buffalo etc), just a suggestion. Ever thought of flying to India out of canada.
With the exchange rate of nearly of approx US $1=1.34 Canadian, it could be
worthwile.
I got a deal from my travel agent for travel to india via singapore (incl a
stay of 1 week in singapore) for 1600 canadian. This works out ot slightly
less than 1200 US. Again this would be useful only for those close to the
Canadian border. Just a thought.

Subject: Tax info.
Hi Friends,
Can some tax gurus help me to interpret the the
substantial presence test to find out whether I am a resident alien or
non resident alien for US tax purposes?
My case is as follows:
Currently I am working as a Post-doc on J-1 visa since 1 april 1993.
Usually J-1 visa holders (teachers, researchers etc) are exempt
individuals for TWO YEARS from the substantial presence test.
But in my case there is another complication because I was here in
US (completely under a different programme - not paid by US govt. or
a resident) for a period of SIX MONTHS (4 months in 1988 and 2 months in
1989) on J-1 visa as a trainee-researcher.
An exemption to exemption cited above says that "An individual will
not be an exempt individual if he/she was exempt as a teacher,
trainee, or student for any part of 2 of 6 preceding calendar years."
"any part of 2 of 6 preceding calendar years" is confusing me.
Does it mean that though I was here for only six months, I lost the
exemption allowed for J-1 visa holders (for TWO YEARS) completely?
Hence under substantial presence test what status should I claim now -
resident alien or non resident alien?
Thanks in advance.
