MOVIE: Bali Umar Ko Salaam
STARRING: Kamal Sadannah, Priya Aurora, Anupam Kher, Saeed Jaffrey, etc...
NUSIC: Bappi Lahiri
DIRECTED BY: Vasant R. Patel
Here is another Indian movie to review! Ha! What a
joke, this is too eazy. Seriously, my desi brothers & sisters, our hindi
movies are getting so annoying, it gets more and more difficult to talk
about them after the whole ORDEAL.
Kamal Sadannah is a rich guy's (Anupam Kher's) only
son, and falls in love with Saeed Jaffrey's only daughter-- Priya Aurora.
It is not really difficult to predict the circumstances before and after
they fall in love. Usual "ENEMIES OF LOVE" crap.
The music is average, done by Bappi Lahiri. Not a
single song is worth humming along with.
One thing I noticed about this movie was that a lot
many scenes were similar to the movie DIL, starring Aamir Khan and
Madhuri Dixit. Wonder what Mr. Patel(director) was thinking... Dil was a
super hit, and trust me everyone, this doesn't even come close.

ON THE WHOLE: 0.5/10, or, worth $.05 out of $1.50(my poor VCR)
FINAL: dont watch it, period.

Subject: Review: Mahanadi (plus good CD's)

Hello film fans! Finally I finished watching the Tamil movie - Mahanadi. It
was at my place for almost 2 weeks, and after having seen it, I can't
believe I actually waited for that long to see it. Its one-heck-of-a-movie.
The movie was released in India on Pongal Day. It stars - Kamal Haasan,
Sukanya, a few new faces, no comedians, etc. Music is by Maestro Illayaraja.
The movie is an A+, as far as story-wise concerned. The pain, trajedy, suffered
by Kamal's character role is personally unbearable. Its amazing what he has to
go through, for a simple wish - to give his children a good education in the
city. The film is about how Kamal is framed by con-artists into giving away
his wealth. The story is carried on like that. Unlike most others, I never
give away any part of the movie, when giving reviews. The film basically
gets better and better as it moves along. It contains only a few "innocent"
fight scenes, contains no vulgar comedy (actually contains no comedians), etc.
Its an art movie, but very entertaining. I bet, its either going to be dubbed
or re-made in Hindi, I guarantee it! You have to see it, its a very good
family film. The ending could have been improved, yet its very ironic how
things develop. Songs are okay! Other film CD's I recommend are: Kizhakku
Cheemaiyile and Roja (Hindi).

More later....Happy viewing!

Subject: Roja

"Roja" was originally made in Tamil by Mani Rathnam. It has been dubbed in
Hindi and Telugu and is called "Roja" in those languages too. I have not
seen the movie, but have heard a lot about it. I have heard the songs.
The music is by Rehman. The film stars Aravind and Madhu (Phool aur Kante)

"Roja" is about a software engineer who gets kidnapped in Kashmir.

The songs are really awesome. They are hits in all the languages. The
songs are played all the time in Buses, Tea-stalls, Hotels,
Chitrahaar,Zee TV...

Mani Rathnam has proven that films other than the standard formula
masala films (Two heroines, One hero, One villain, two rapes, One
helicopter, two tree songs, one disco songs...) can also make it to
the box-office. He made "Nayakan" - about Varadharaja Mudhaliar &
"Anjali" - about a spastic child which were also hits.

Hi Nettors,
This is in response to a query about Super Travels of N.Y. sometime back on the
net. I lost the relevant email addresses and hence I am replying on the net.

Try to avoid this Travel Agent. They may not swipe your money but they are
a bunch of bungle-heads. They will misspell your name, mix travel coupons with
some body else's and then take the max time possible in mailing the ticket.
Above all they will not tell you whether a connection exists on the return and
you might end up having two-three overnight halts on your way back (With me
this happened in '93 when I was flying from Detroit to Cal).

As far as I remember this agency had a few Bangladeshi people working.
Hope this comes to somebody's use.
Cheers.

Subject: An old couple needs information help

An couple sponsored by their daughter came to USA in November 1993 as landed
immigrants. The newly arrived lady slipped on snow and broke her ankle on
Dec. 25th evening. She was taken to a hospital and had to be operated on .
The hospital bill is about $ 8600.00 (US) and the surgeons bill off about
$1600.00 (US).

Unfortunately this new couple had no job and therefore no insurance, and are
now stuck with the bills.
The surgeon's bill was paid with some money from the home owners insurance
but the hospitals bill is till outstanding.

In theory the state should pick up the tab as they do not have any job i.e.
no income family. The hospital is asking for the papers of the daughter's
family who sponsored and signed the bond for 10 years. The couple is still
living with their daughter and do not want to burden her family any more.

If anyone has been though something similar or has information of how to
help this old couple please
reply with the information. My Internet address is

Subject: Few questions on delivering seminars & flight prices

Dear netters,
I am leaving japan for good to work at center for artificial
intelligence and robotics (CAIR) bangalore from where I have to attend
IEEE robotics and auto. conference in San diego around May 6 1994. I
have been awarded IEEE's 'developing countries travel fellowship' but
it does not cover up all the expenses that I will incur. So I hope to
raise money from different sources and wondered if presenting my work
at some universities (in the field of shared intelligence in
telerobotics, path planning in configuration space and assembly in
robotics along with my japanese collegue on 3D spatial flexible link
manipulators) could help me out. I would like to move from west coast
to east visiting standford univ., univ. of penns., penns. state univ.,
CMU, MIT .... and would be interested in knowing if some invitations
for delivering seminars from nearby universities (along with travel
assistance and the like within US) can be raised.
Also, I have to make an estimate of what is the air ticket
price from Bangalore -> San Diego -> JFK -> Bangalore around May 6
1994. Is it better to travel within US by train to save money or is a
round ticket from bangalore a better idea? Unfortunately I am unable
to find this information from japan because they do not inform us
about flights other than those that are to and fro from japan.
Any info. regarding this will be very much appreciated. If some of my
friends happen to be on route, then it would be lovely to say you all
a big HI ....
Thanks in advance

Subject: Beware of Con Artists

Natrajank's recent post on this topic reminded me of my
similar expierence a few years ago:
Six of us from Panipat came as students to the States in 1963,
and I posted the "Purane Pappees [Old Sinners] - The Travails and
Triumphs of a 1963 Student" on the net a while back. We all are
settled in the Wahington area and naturally are rather close to
each other, and are also called "Panipatyas."
A few years back I got a call from a stranger claiming to be
the older brother of one of the "Purane Pappee", and that he had
brought something from my sister in Panipat. We chatted about
Panipat and I was real pleased to recieve "Gur ka Tosha" (brown
sugar sweets), which is one of my favorites.
He called after a few weeks saying he needed some help. I
invited him over thinking that it must be about employment etc. He
was very solicitious about my well being and happy at my triumphs
in this country etc. [real "cheekna" (oily) in hindsight]. After a
song and dance story he asked if I could lend him $300 for a few
weeks. When I was writing the check he requested to make it $500.
After a few months I called and he was going to bring over the
payment next week. Well, to make the story short that next week
never came after many many calls. One Sunday morning I dropped by
without calling and caught him at his apartment but again the damn
"next week" which never came.
Then I discovered HE HAD HIT OTHER "PURANE PAPPEES" TOO WITH
THE SAME SOB STORY. We all were going to try to forget the damn con
except that it used to bug me a lot. And Abrol, who is the "joker"
of our gang would just tease the hell out of me at our social
gatherings, which used to be almost every week. "Here comes Tuteja
- the wise guy of our gang - i have a message for you from Panipat - now
can I borrow some money too" etc.
Finally on someone's advice I filed a lawsuit in Small Claims
Court. There is no need to hire a lawyer - the claim had to be less
than $750 - and you just paid the cost for mailing a registered
notice to the defendent. He showed up in the court with an ashen
face and said to the judge that HE HAD BEEN TRYING TO GET HOLD OF ME TO
RETURN THE MONEY! I decided not to make an issue of that, took my money
and ran. I just couldn't wait till I waved those 500 dollars to my
"Panipatya" gang, especially Abrol at our following party!

For those who are intrested in building a powerful empire with
military might can have a look into this.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired
signifies in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not
fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not
spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the

Subject: May Your Honor Accept a Bit of Moral Responsibility

The dream of "Promised Land" in UP have gone sour. Mulayam hasn't even warmed
up his chair. And all the tall promises have found their way to the dustbin.
There are well organized caste clashes going on between the goons of Kanshi &
"Softie", led openly by their patrons in the State Cabinet. Highlights:- R.A.
Paswan, a close aide of minister D.N. Bhaskar was shot at Chandauli; Within hrs.
3 thakurs were murdered in revenge; Followed by students in Varanasi going on a
rampage, setting Harijan houses on fire; Clearly the Thakurs were murdered at
Bhaskar's behest, whose dismissal was demanded by the students; Instead of
distancing himself from the murders, Bhaskar justified them openly; Thus
inflaming the casteist passions; The brunt of caste violence was faced by poor
Harijans; And top of that Bhaskar got the Magistrate and SSP transfered,
leaving the administration rudderless, which was unable to cope up with the
rioting in the Dist. (Varanasi); Bhaskar also refused to hand over the body of
Paswan for ten hrs. and instead instigated the Harijans to go on rioting.
Meanwhile at Kanpur, Kala Bachcha Sonekar, a Harijan BJP MLA was murdered in
broad daylight, few yards away from his residence. Bombs were hurled at him.
It is believed that a new Pan-Islamic outfit known as Babari Action Till
Construction is behind the assassination of Sonekar. The cmtee. is funded by
Dawood leftovers in Bombay, who paid Rs. 4 lakhs for the Sonekar murder. The
State Govt. in all its "infinite wisdom", indebted to Pan-Islamists for their
chairs, acted in a high-handed manner. Instead of going behind the culprits,
they arrested 2 BJP MPs, few BJP MLAs and protestors who were protesting the
murders. The Govt. even refused to hand over the body of Sonekar to his family.
The family including his mother were severly beaten. His body was cremated by
the Police without his family's presence. At Dauna village (Allahbad Dist.) a
group of OBCs, led by Softie's henchmen, paraded a Harijan women naked. In
Fatehpur Kanjar (SC) houses were burned by the OBCs; Organized rape of a Harijan
woman was committed in Barabanki; In Hamirpur Dist. an OBC woman was raped by
some Harijans led by a BSP MLA, Kanshi's top goon; In Badaun Dist. Yadavs burned
Jatav (SC) houses, looted property and raped their women; ... Oh this madness.
Softie's former friends have again indulged in their nefarious activities (rape,
dacoity, extortions, murder, kidnappings) under the patronage of their Master.
Under Kalyan Singh, such elements were either in jail or on the run. Caste
violence was brought to the nil. There was a Govt. worth its salt. In fact,
after the first phase of liberation of Lord ____ (that four-letter word is
forbidden on Bharat-D), while Bombay burned and a town like Meerut didn't, was
due to KS's policies. When Softie won the CM's chair, he was hailed as the
saviour of secularism by guys on Bharat-D (Muqtedaar Khan and Co.). Would the
friends of Softie accept a bit of moral responsibility, for the atrocities being
committed on poor harijans???????       -- Rajiv Varma {rvarma@ccaix.jsums.edu}

Subject: Nag Missile Gives Indian Army Chief Cause for Cheer

Source: Indian Express, Feb 18, 1994 (from misc.news.southasia)

Ahmednager: Chief of Army Staff General B.C. Joshi on Wednesday expressed
his satisfaction over the progress of Nag anti-tank guided missile and is
hopeful that its induction into the Indian army will coincide with the
induction of a similar missile in the US army.
"The Indian Army may possess the missile even before the
Americans", Joshi told newspersons at the Armoured Corps Centre and
School - Ahmednager, immediately after inaugurating a unique tank
museum. He was visibly confident about the capability of this third
generation "fire and forget" anti-tank missile.
He, however, declined to comment on the performance of the
missile and reported interest shown by Americans. The General lauded
the efforts of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and his team at the DRDO for the
accomplishments on the missile front.
The Indians and the Americans, as far as anti-tank missiles are
concerned, are toying with the same technology. The Americans have the
Rockwell - Martin Marietta Hellfire missile.
The Nag anti-tank missile, presently on trial, has a four kilometer
range and is mounted on a tracked vehicle with Line of Sight radar for
target detection and acquisition. The radar picks up the targets and
passes on the information to an on board computer. Within seconds the
image coordinates are passed on to the missile, which in turn aligns
its sights and blasts away.
The missile is considered on the frontline of research in this
area as its capable of successfully countering the recent advances in
tank armour including the "reactive" types. Moreover, it has
"smokeless" propellant making it difficult for the enemy to locate the
launcher. After firing, the launcher can "scoot" away from the place.
Gen. Joshi also revealed that the Prithvi missile was being
inducted. For a while he spoke about Arjun MBT and maintained that he
had himself "fired" and "driven" the tank.
"Only when we are fully satisfied we will induct the tank.
Technologically, we have mastered the art of building Main Battle
Tank (MBT)", he said.

Subject: Rajya Sabha

Friends,
Thank you for responding to my inquiry regarding Rajya Sabha. I still have
few questions.

1. The MLA's vote on the candidacy of Rajya Sabha candidates. Is my
understanding correct ? Therefore the party which has majority in
state legislature will elect most of the Rajya Sabha members from that
    state.
2. How come there is usually no official opposing candidates from the
various parties ? Is this because the parties already know how members
they can send and select their candidates internally.
3. Also like the US system (number of Senators is equal irrespective of
state population), Bhartiya states don't have equal presentation in
the Bhartiya constitution. Basically, the Lok Sabha members & Rajya
Sabha members are based on state population. Therefore, if the populous
states decide to, they can do what ever they like (in terms of passing
bills). Is my understanding correct ?

Subject: Reg. Article 370 (Response to Mr Shyam), Part 1/2

The intent of enacting the Article 370 was not to give a special status to the
J & K (which it does now) but it was device meant to extend provisions of the
Constitution of India step by step and eventually the article would have become
irrelevant and ineffective. It was purely a temporary measure and this is not
only evident from the debate in the Constituent Assembly, but also hinted by
Pt. Nehru in his address to a special delagation by the following comment:
Samvidhan ki dhara 370 ghiste ghiste ghis jaayegi (Article 370 of the Consti-
tution will disappear by getting eroded and eroded). And now all the secular
parties and Muslim leaders are intent of making this article as a permanent
feature in the constitution with more teeth added to it. What an irony???
The special mention of some States or some special concessions for certain
States in the Constitution, is not at all comparable or justifiable for the
continuence of the Article 370, which gives Kashmir not only separate
constituition, separate flag, and separate citizenship laws, but also most of
the laws, bills and amendments passed by the Parliament are not applicable to
the State of J & K. Also a citizen of J & K can be a citizen of any part of
India, but not vice versa, this is unique only in case of Kashmir and is a
direct outcome of article 370. The same cannot be said about article 371 or
other similar provisions for other states. Not only this if a girl born in
J & K marries an Indian (not born in J &K), will lose all her rights to the
State including paternal property rights etc. There are similar other numerous
distortions and discriminations betwen the citizens of India, when it comes to
Kashmir and Article 370. Even the President of India cannot have full citizens-
hip rights in the State of J & K, if he happens to be a non- Kashmiri citizen.
As compared to this, the provisons made for some other States basically
protect their tribal culture and/or their regional economic interests, and in
no way promotes or encourages separatist tendencies as in case of Art.370.
For example Article 371 permits Development Boards for Vidarbha, Marathwada,
Saurashtra and Kutch. Article 371-A protects Naga Customary Law and their land
ownership. Same is the position with regard to other North-Eastern States like
Mizoram and Arunchal Pradesh. Article 371-E provides for a Central University
in Andhra. Article 371-F fixes the strength of Sikkim Assembly at thirty.

Subject: Reg. lack of Anti-Hindi agitations by Rakesh Dubey

Being from Karnataka, I can talk only about the situation in
Karnataka. I've hardly seen any language tensions in Karnataka
except the anti-Tamil wave whenever Cauvery river dispute
reaches flash-point. And some 13 years back there was a
state wide strike for implementing Gokak report regarding
status of Kannada language.
If you look at the general population of Karanataka you will
find most of them are bi-lingual (even after excluding English).
You can find most them having a mother tongue other than
Kannada and Kannada is used like a link language between
these people. People with Kannada as their mother tongue
usually know atleast one more language apart from Kannada
which I guess makes them more tolerant towards other languages
let alone Hindi.
Besides there are different types of Kannada with different
vocabulary in different parts of the state. The Kannada spoken
in Dharwad (they call it Masculine Kannada!) is very different
from soft accented Kannada (femenine?) of Mysore for instance.
And Kannada spoken in Mangalore is called Bookish Kannada since
they pronouce the words exactly the way it is written.
Besides this, Karnataka homes two more languages namely Tulu and
Kodava mostly restricted to South Canara & Coorg destricts.
(Again there are different types of Tulu..., never mind)
Though I know both these languages, I cannot recall any instance
of gaining an advantage by knowing these languages in both these
destricts since one can comfortably use Kannada or English in
these places (However, Tulu can be used effectively to speed-up
food orders in most Bombay hotels). In South Canara destrict, even
Konkani ( Slightly different from Goan Konkani) is widely spoken
other than Tulu and Kannada.
Finally coming to Bangalore, it is a mini-India where you can find
large section of people from every major language and to be frank
there is no single common language. While English acts as common
language between most educated people, rest of them manage by
knowing either Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil etc., or a combination
of two or more of these languages. In fact Tamil & Telugu movies
run better than Kannada movies in Bangalore. - Sharath K S

Subject: The truth about Human Rights in Kashmir- Francois Gautier (1/2)

When Ms. Benazir Bhutto thunders in Geneva on the Human Rights abuses in
Kashmir, comparing the plight of the Kashmiris with "the genocide of the
Jews by the Nazis", when Amnesty International lambasts India for "its iron
hand in the Valley," when the United States, courtesy Ms. Robin Raphel,
compares the situation in Kashmir "to the one in Afghanistan," they all are
doing a grave injustice to a great country.
For not only have Indians never been Nazis in their entire history,India's
record in Human Rights, even if not unblemished, is infinitely better than
some of its neighbours, such as Afghanistan or Pakistan. As far as Kashmir
is concerned, Kashmiri Hindus have suffered far more from human rights
abuses than their Muslim brothers.
Indeed, everybody seems to forget that not so long ago, the whole of Kashmir
was Hindu and Buddhist. The Kashmiri Pandits have records of 5,000 years of
existence in Kashmir. That many of Kashmir's inhabitants were later forcibly
or otherwise converted by Muslim invaders is a historical fact; so be it, one
cannot rewrite history. But what of the remaining Kashmiri Hindus?
In 1941, according to census figures, there were 15% Hindus in the Kash-
mir valley; in 1981, 5% ; in 1991, 0.1% . And today? 99.9% of the Hindu pop-
ulation has fled the Valley under terror and pressure tactics. There are to-
day 350,000 Kashmiri Pandits living in abysmal abysmal conditions in refugee
camps in Delhi and Jammu? How many people abroad, even in India know of the
horrors they lived through: the midnight knocks, the stories of the men shot,
strangled, kidnapped? 1,200 of them have been brutally assassinated in the
past five years; 1,600 of their houses destroyed. Does any one mention that
these people are refugees in their own homelands, living on a govt. dole of
Rs.1,500/month, that they have left everything behind: property, houses, land?
Yet, Ms. Bhutto's intense media campaign on human rights in the Valley is
successfully taking root. Why is it that a people who have throughout their
history shown unparalleled tolerance in accepting other's creeds in their
fold, whether Christianity, Islam or Buddhism, even recognizing their
divinity, who have never tried to convert anybody to their religion, are
seen today as communalist, intolerant, Nazi even? Why this great injustice,
this unbeleivable scam, which Pakistan and the Kashmiri militants are using
to the hilt?
The first culprits are sections of the Indian intelligentsia, journalists,
writers, artists, bureaucrats. They shape the minds of foreign journalists
and western diplomats, who from day one of their posting, turn towards them
for their information and the making of their opinion about India. In turn,
these journalists write harsh articles on the Indian scene and the di-
plomats send adverse reports to their governments.
