There is a great deal of interest in catalogue sales in Japan right now,
but it depends on the type of products you are selling. Japanese consumers
are most interested in 'brand' items, household goods. They like to order
from established companies which sell "normal American" products. LL Bean,
Liberty House, and Storybook Heirlooms are very popular, but they have a
theme, a niche market. I don't know if "Colorad products" is a theme that
could hold together.
I am currently working with a company in Monterrey, CA called Pacific Reach
to put to gether a catalogue "delegation" trip here to Tokyo for 10 -12
U.S. catalogers in September. If you are interested you should contact
Monica Kusakabe at P.O. Box 549, Monterey, CA 93942-0549. Tel (408)
656-0446, Fax: (408) 373-7308. She can probably give you a good overview
of the market here.
The place in Japan you should contact for information:
MIPRO The Manufactured Imports Promotion Organization
Kiyotaka Hishida, Assistant Director Tel (81) 3-3988-2791
Fax: (81) 3-3988-1629
They are an arm of JETRO and are currently holding an exhibition until Dec.
called "The American Catalogue House".In the MIPRO center they have a
catalogue corner where walk-in users can buy American catalogues and get
help on ordering They can also send you guidebooks on the industry in
Japan. You should also ask them for info on the Japan Direct Mail
Association.
