This is installment 2 about the 1992 VM Workshop. I will only
interrupt you once more this year. I've included several of the
talks scheduled for this year. We have a lot of talks on networking,
and many on VM/ESA. This should be an exciting year, as VM/ESA
will be coming into many shops, and it will be the first chance
in a long time for us to have common experiences. I'd also like to
highlight the opportunity to take an IBM class in Fayetteville
on Tuesday before the VM Workshop. Details are provided below
about course EM925 - VMPAF. While we are open to talks on all
topics associated with VM, I'd like to really seek out some more
VM/ESA experience talks. In addition, if you are running AIX on
a S/370 or above, that is a topic I have received several requests
to obtain talks about.
I'd like to highlight a comment Mark Stevens put on VMSHARE:
>Having made presentations at a couple of workshops and having talked to
>people who have and have not made presentations, I can finally tell you
>only how I feel/felt ;->
>I wonder if what I will present will be useful to someone else, when
>it seems I'm the only one with that problem. Will the room be empty?
>Even worse, will they laugh at me?
>When those problems are surmounted, I've got to make the time around
>all the other projects I'm supposed to be working on for the users of
>my system, learning new things, etc.
>Finally, I have a "thing" I can talk about. How long? Handouts?
>Overheads? Mac/PC/Online demo?
>Best "thing" to do is volunteer to talk about your latest solution.
>Make copies of your overheads as handouts and talk 1/2 hour. No one
>will laugh. People will attend. And you will save at least one
>person from the grief you went through.
I encourage you to attend, and consider giving a talk.

David Avery of Dartmouth will give a short talk on LISTVIEW, a Rexx
and Xedit application that searchs and displays the list-of-lists on
Bitnet and the Internet. It uses the list-of-lists data file available
from Dartmouth. It's a trivial but useful application, a 15 minute
time slot would be more than adequate.
The application and May database file will be included on the tools tape.
---
Gabe Goldberg:
IBM Information Network Services, Especially IBM Mail Exchange
Painless VM/ESA Enhancements with Service Virtual Machines
IBMLink -- What is it and Why Would I Want One?
---
Mark A. Stevens
Having said all that, I would volunteer to talk about: uh, who me?
Okay, RSCS printing through TCP/IP and Getting VMSECURE and SFS to
worker together, well at least not against each other. Abstracts
when I can make the time. ;-)
Mark (Who me? Talk?) Stevens
---
Arty Ecock:
"RXSOCKET - A TCP/IP Socket Library for REXX"
It shouldn't last longer than an hour. Details for the abstract
will follow.
Arty will also run his Ugly Hawaiian Shirt contest.
---
John Kinne - Miami U will talk about a Report Distribution Facility
on VM. It's purpose is to receive Reports, files, listings, and
other things that MVS used to print on paper. (It can receive files
from anything that is connected to our VM - but most of the things
are from MVS.) Instead of printing the reports, they are
electronically distributed. In some cases the whole report is
distributed to a list of users. Other times the report needs
to be burst into sub-reports. The distribution is not limited to
VM users. A target account can be anything that VM can e-mail to!
As I said - this thing is being built. I've got it doing some
production distribution right now. What I've got was easy to
put together - and boy oh boy do I have some happy users. The
only thing that gripes me is that we didn't do this a few years
ago. (But then a few years ago I don't think I would have been
allowed to engage in this kind of end user support. Things are
changing. Progress is pityless.)
----
Jeff Savit:
Right now we're looking at having two people attend. We'll
certainly provide talks! Tentatively (pick N from the following):
- A TCP/IP Socket interface for APL2 (based on RXSOCKET!)
- Caring for and feeding SFS, (and why you might want to)
- (If desired) A Strategic Viewpoint for VM (I did this last year,
but I've added a lot more material)
- TCP/IP V2R2 experiences (if we have any by then!)
- How to run a VM user group
- Experiences with APPC/VM LU6.2 applications in VM
- VM/ESA maintenance
- VM/ESA performance
---
Romney White - Velocity Software:
I expect to talk about using VM Data Spaces. The presentation will
take about an hour and will cover how the interfaces work, experience
using them, and some performance measurements.
---
Martha McConaghy:
I'm planning on doing a new and improved version of my talk on creating
a second level system for testing. I may also throw something together
on installing VM/ESA using the SDO, while that's still fresh in my mind.
---
David Boyes:
a) Intro to RiceMAIL
What is RiceMAIL? Why would I want to use it? Where can I get it?
RiceMAIL is a RFC822 compatible mail user agent written by Richard
Schafer (my current boss) that allows users of VM systems to compose,
read, and manage electronic mail. I'll have an example session on
our system, and (maybe) a preview of the CUA/SAA RiceMAIL.
b) Care and Feeding of LISTSERV
What is LISTSERV? What does it do, and specifically, what do you as
a maintainer need to do to keep it running smoothly.
This should be part talk/part discussion.
c) It's How You Play The Game: How to be a Good BITNet Citizen
Lots of folks newly connected to BITnet aren't really sure about
what to do and when/how often it needs to be done with all the
piles of software and configuration files. Here's a distillation
of all the junk I had to figure out how to do the hard way on
playing in the BITnet sandbox.
d) BOF: VM Survival Tactics in a World Headed for Workstations
This was a good BOF last year on how to keep VM viable in
your shop in an increasingly personal computer and Unix workstation
environs. I hope it follows Jeff Savit's killer talk on VM tactics, so
we can maybe discuss that stuff in more detail. I chaired last year, and
I'm willing to do it again.
---
Paul Russell / Indpls Life Ins Co
I've received the official blessing to attend this year's Workshop, and
will plan to do a presentation on "How to build an SVM". I'll need an
overhead projector and about an hour. I'll provide some generic REXX
code that we use as the basis for almost every CMS-based SVM that we put
up, as well as some example of some specific functions implemented with
that code.
---
Daniel P. Martin - U of Arkansas:
Avard Hart, IBM regional VM specialist for our area, will be
presenting two topics at the Workshop.
(1) "VM in the Client/Server Arena -- To play, or not to play"
(2) VM Server Tasking Environment (PRPQ P81089)
Also, please refer to the contents of MEMO VMWK92ED -- Paul Van Leer,
developer of VM/PAF, will be available to provide a seminar on
this product on Tuesday, 16 June and one-on-one consultation
to participants in the seminar during the rest of the Workshop.
Several individuals from local VM installations have already indicated
plans to participate in this seminar in addition to the Workshop.
If you are interested, see MEMO VMWK92ED for further details.
----
Phil Unger - Rijnhaave Info Svcs:
I can do a sort of repeat of my Share 78 talk 'CMS Windows Revisited'.
However, I can go into a little more detail on 'how to'.
The focus is on two 'imaginative' applications of CMS Windows:
1) A cut-and-paste XEDIT macro
2) A CMS Windows interface to RSCS, as opposed to SMSG commands
and MSG responses.
----
Eric Bitterman of TIAA will give a talk on their GCS profiler
and one on their minidisk manager.
----
Laura Brey of Johnson Controls will give a talk on converting to
SneakerNet to a TCP/IP networking from the VM perspective.

Possible educational opportunities around the 1992 VM Workshop
There is a very good possibility that Paul Van Leer of IBM Kingston
will be available to conduct a one-day seminar on VM/PAF on 16 June.
The seminar would conver VM/PAF and analysis techniques, and would also
provide an opportunity for participants to bring their own monitor
data to Fayetteville and do "PAF things" to in a hands-on setting.
In order to pull this off, we would need at least 20 participants
who could commit to the seminar. The seminar would be administered
through IBM education, and not officially affiliated with the
Workshop - except for the happy coincidence that it's scheduled
at the same place, on the day before. There would be a registration
fee for the seminar, over and above the Workshop registration fee;
this amount has not yet been determined.
This would be a great opportunity for all of us to learn about VM/PAF
directly from Mr. Van Leer. If you believe that you would be able
to come to the Workshop a day early and participate in the seminar,
please indicate so below. If we're going to do this, we need to
have a reasonably firm "head count" within another two or three
weeks.

Append on 04/01/92 at 17:29 by Daniel P. Martin - DMARTIN@UAFSYSB:
No doubt you have all been waiting anxiously for more concrete
information... :-)
The IBM course ID for this will be EM925. Registration for the
seminar will be $95.00, and will provide participants with
(1) A one-day tutorial on Tuesday, 16 June, on VM/PAF from the
developer.
(2) For those who want to bring copies of their own data to
the workshop for analysis, access to Mr. Van Leer and
VM/PAF on the UA computing facilities for hands-on analysis
of said data during Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of the
Workshop.
Registration for the seminar goes to IBM; the Workshop receives
no funds from this.
The course ID should be known to the IBM education folks on
and after 04/03/92.
In order to give me a feel for the level of interest in this,
and so we can prepare facilities for the seminar, please drop
a note to WORKSHOP@UAFSYSB
