Hi,
We run VM/XA 2.1 on a 4381 R24. We have around 1600 users in our
user directory. We have two 3880's, eight single density 3380's and
one double. Anyway... I'm trying to figure out a way to get back disk
space from users who aren't using what they've been allocated.
I see lots of people in the VMRMUA report who have only one or two files
sitting on a minidisk that hasn't been updated in ages.
I have read in the archives of this list about how some sites have
this all fully automated... ie.. Professor X goes away for a long time.
His minidisk ages. A service machine sends his minidisk to tape after it
is idle for six months. A year later the good Professor logs on, he gets
a msg saying *ONE MOMENT PLEASE* as his minidisk is reallocated and
reloaded.
As I face the problem of getting my DASD back, I'm wishing VMCENTER II
had this scheme built in. I'm somewhat wary of running someone else's
code for this sort of thing because I wouldn't be able to fix it if it
broke. Right now I'm leaning towards doing something simpler (manual).
I could identify the deadbeats with VMRMUA. Back them up with a
VMBACKUP job retpd of a couple years, and restore Professor X when he
calls me up and says "Why ain't I in the CP directory no more?". I'd
say "One moment please....". We are small enough that I figure my
phone wouldn't ring tooo often.
With this method, I realize I wouldn't be able to re-use any of
the userids I swept off to tape, but that's not a big problem. Are
there other things I should worry about? Do other sites use VMARCHIVE
for doing this? Do most of the automatic schemes use VMSECURE rules
extensively? Any advice on this will be greatly appreciated. T.S.
