I manage a lab of 26 Win95 machines, eight in a public access room and 18 in
a training room. We use a hard disk array and a product called
CD-QUICKSHARE for networked CD-ROMS using Pathworks (oh, how I long for
Netware). However, I'm not completely satisfied with QUICKSHARE and wonder
if others have recommendations for something else.
Quickshare is indeed quick, and simulates actually inserting a CD-ROM into
the particular machine. However, it seems to have *NO* facilities for
launching the CD-ROM, which I find a little ridiculous. Patrons (many of
which have no computer experience) have to stumble through two-step process:
(1) run CD-SHARE from the START menu and select the CD they want to use, and
(2) hit another menu item to give the CD's "run" command. This causes great
confusion. There are no command line options to make this a single-step
process, and my experiments with DOS batch files have been a dismal failure.
In addition, we have numerous CD's that simply won't run over the network.
Some come so close (running for a while on some machines) that I wonder if
some tinkering would help...but there's nothing to tinker with that I can see.
Suggestions?
