I don't know about locking out printers, but our HP utilities allow
us to give each printer a precise name that makes identifying them no
problem. I might add that if you are using a Novell network, you
shold be able to setup the zone so that all printing goes through
Novell queues, with tighter control on who's printing where.

I have a bit of a problem... In our building we have 5 HP Laserjet 5si /mx's
and only one zone (appletalk). We are only allowed one zone per building
via ethernet. The chooser sees all of these printers but the macs should
only be printing to one. Unfortunately they all have the same name so it is
hard to distinguish them. The printers are smart enough to detect
themselves by order of when they are turned on, so depending on when your
printer gets turned on you may be printing to HP Laserjet 5si 1 or HP
Laserjet 5si 5, or any number in between. Right now the only option is to
go to the printer, print out a configuration page and see what it called
itself to get the correct name. Then you have to go to each mac and set up
the chooser. I suppose I can leave the printer on all the time and the name
won't change, but I would like another solution. Laser Writer Lock out
won't work because if I lock out a specific name, a different printer may
have that name the very next day. I need either spooling software or an
extenstion that can detect printers by their LAN HW address or ip address.
Any suggestions?
