----------------------------Original message---------------------------- I've been setting up a 70 station lab with NT since August, so please forgive me if I have missed a similar question in my hasty catch-up with my accumulated LABMGR mail. How are you all doing with finding utilities for distributing the set-up (we call it an image) of a "master" microcomputer to the workstations on the floor? I used the Resource Kit stuff at first but it's way too awkward, slow and limited. DiskMagic 95 works great (with NT, 95, NTFS, long file names, NTserver, Novell, even different size hard drives) and is easy to use and fast. But it's pricey. (Reasonable people may disagree.) Has anyone found anything better or cheaper? -Ed I. Edward Aasvik, Supervisor | ABUAASVI@COBFAC.IDBSU.EDU 208-385-4132 College of Business Microcomputer Lab, Boise State University 83725

I have the same problem. Even with each lab having identical machines
distribution is a problem. To top it off I haven't yet resolved dynamic
assignment of ip addresses so each station has to have its own ip address.
What I have done for the interim is:
partition the drives
c: just large enough for boot, utilities, network client
d: holds all apps including win95
e: couple dozen meg for zip files
f: couple megs for scratch, temp, student play
and then drivespace the d: partition, have it contain all apps and win95.
I store the drvspace file on a novell server.
To restore machine (usually just need to bring back d:) I just boot up in dos
mode, kill the attributes on the drvspace file and delete it, copy the stored
file to each machine, reboot and change tcp/ip addresses in the registry.
This has worked so far although it's a bit of a pain. I too find the
diskmagic a bit pricey, even with their ed/vol discount.
Would be interested in any solutions you/others may find.
