Well, we have just put the finishing touches on a huge installation where
we are charging for printing in all of our public labs and in the Library.
We started on this project in May -in May we weren't even sure this was
possible in our environment - and as I said, we just have completed the
install.

We have learned a lot from this and I am in the process of formally writing
this up, but basically here's the scenario.

We have 17 labs on campus (plus the library), a mixed environment
(Macintosh, WIN95, varieties of unix including NeXT, SUN, and HPUX), Novell
4.1 and 3.11 (mostly 4.1), about 1200 client seats. You get the picture!

The printing is ALL routed to some WinNT printservers that in turn display
the print jobs on print stations by the printers. The student walks up and
swipes their id card (ours uses the Griffen system), the station tells them
how much money they have in their account, they select their print job, the
station tells them how much it will cost, they click print and the job goes
to the printer and the amount is deducted from their account.

The vendor is handling EVERYTHING including loading paper and toner. They
are extremely service oriented and we love them already.

We examined other options (including tackle boxes of change under the desks
- which I ruled out from the start!) and other vendors and we are really
happy so far.

We have been able to add color printing at $.50 per page ( b & w is $.10).
There are some things that we could have done differently (telling the
students ahead of time would have eliminated a lot of ill will) that would
have made a difference, but all in all it has come off without a hitch.

The vendor that we found is CDP Imaging Systems in Minneapolis who
partnered with Pharos (whose product Uniprint makes all of this possible).

I will write more later and would be happy to answer questions if you have them.

Mary
