Subject: LRRT Research Award and Forum
LRRT wishes to announce two annual and related events: the 1993 Jesse H.
Shera Award for research and the 1993 research forums. Both involve
papers reporting research, but only one offers a prize. In both cases
eligibility is NOT limited to LRRT members.
1. The Jesse H. Shera Award for Research, with a prize of $500, will
be awarded to an outstanding and original paper reporting the results of
research related to library and information science. The paper will be
presented by the author at an LRRT meeting during the 1993 ALA Annual
Conference. Please direct questions and requests for a copy of the
guidelines to the chair of the LRRT Shera Award Committee: David Carr,
SCILS-Rutgers University, 4 Huntington Street, New Brunswick, NJ 08903.
(Phone: 908-932-8315). Note that the guidelines have been changed to
expand the potential pool of papers for Shera Award consideration.
Deadline for submitting entries is February 1, 1993.
2. The Research Forum series at the ALA Conference is a series of
programs featuring research presentations followed by discussions. This
announcement is a call for papers. Completed projects will receive
priority. A notice of intent is required by December 16, 1992. Selections
will be made at ALA Midwinter and final notification of acceptance will be
sent to successful applicants by February 8, 1993. Submissions may be
currently under consideration for publication. Authors should emphasize
either theory, methodology, or significance of research findings for library
and information studies. Please submit the following submission form no
later than December 16, 1992 to: Jo Bell Whitlatch, 1801 Edgewood Lane,
Menlo Park, CA 94025 (Phone:408-924-2742).
NOTE: Papers submitted to the Shera Award Committee may also be
sent to the Research Forums Committee, provided both committee chairpersons
are informed.

Subject: Information Resources Map of Northern Ontario
INFORMATION RESOURCES MAP OF NORTHERN ONTARIO (previously announced on
DEOS-L and OFFCAMP)
Students, faculty and researchers in Northern Ontario often find their
activities hampered by the inaccessibility of data. Often the data exist, but
are scattered or embedded in larger collections or databases. In a concentrated
urban area it is relatively easy for a student or researcher to travel from
library to library for information; in the North, the distances involved makes
this strategy very difficult. The development of a "map" or master directory of
information sources would go a long way toward improving information access in
the North and would allow students and researchers to make choices about how
and where to locate the resources they need.
The Information Resources Map of Northern Ontario is a collaborative effort by
librarians at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario and at York
University in North York, Ontario. The objective of the Map is to identify
information resources in Northern Ontario and bring them together in a single
machine-readable directory or "map". The Map is not a union list, but a
directory which will list information on services, collections, accessibility
and other features at each information site. These sites will include
libraries at all levels, agencies (hospitals, women's centres, native centres)
businesses, museums and archives. Indexing by location, keyword, subject, etc.
will enable users to identify the most appropriate location for their
information needs.
There are two phases to the project. The first phase, now underway, involves
gathering information, via a questionnaire, from the selected sites. The
second phase will see the development and testing of the database. It is
expected that the database will serve as a prototype for other areas where
information resources are widely scattered.
