WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 26) -- The American public is split over =
the need for NATO airstrikes against Yugoslavia, according to the latest =
CNN/TIME poll. But the new poll also reveals a majority of Americans =
believe that success in the NATO mission would include the overthrow of =
Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.=20

The survey shows 44 percent of those questioned approve of the =
airstrikes, while 40 percent oppose the NATO operation and 16 percent =
say they are not sure. The poll also shows that America is equally =
unsure whether stopping Serbian actions in Kosovo is in the United =
States' national interests. Forty-three percent believe it is while 44 =
percent think it is not and 13 percent are unsure.=20

Regardless of whether it is in United States' interest, half of =
Americans think the U.S. has a moral obligation to stop Serbian actions =
in Kosovo.=20

Fifty-nine percent of those questioned say a successful NATO mission =
would halt the Serbian attacks in Kosovo, while 54 percent say success =
would include removing Milosevic from power.=20

Eighty-two percent of those questioned would judge the NATO mission =
successful if a peace agreement results from the strikes. And if a peace =
agreement is reached, 59 percent of those questioned favor sending in =
U.S. and NATO peacekeeping forces to enforce it. Only 34 percent oppose =
sending in peacekeeping troops.=20

The survey of 1,049 adult Americans was conducted March 25, 1999 and has =
a margin of sampling error of +/- three percentage points.=20
