I know many Internal Medicine residencies have a combined residency/post-doc. They add a year to residency and take some of the clinical time and put it towards lab time, resulting in 1-2 years in the lab out of 4. One of the faculty here did his residency/post-doc at Brigham & Womens and then moved into a combined cardiology fellowship/faculty appointment. I don't know if that sort of thing is still out there, but I'm interested in it. That way you become faculty 5 years after graduation, not 6-9 (4 yr residency/post-doc, 1 yr full-time fellowship, The remainder of the fellowship is split clinical/lab). I haven't spoken to him about the details, but on the surface it sounds attractive, especially if you want to do fellowship. If I end up doing a residency only and not a fellowship, I'm leaning towards completing an uninterupted residency, then doing a post-doc as a way to get re-established. Then again, I haven't even completed my PhD yet, so who knows what I'll end up doing. Brian M. Block Neurosci, 5/8 Case Western Reserve Univ
